SUMMARY:SFC: Family Friendly Beehive Tour
DESCRIPTION:From the Sustainable Food Center –\nA beekeeping class– just for kids! In this Sustainable Food Center class\, kids (recommended ages 7-16) will learn about the important role honey bees play in our food system and how they go about making what we all love so much – honey! We will learn about the three different castes of honey bees and the important role each plays in the hive. We will discuss the development cycle from the time a queen lays an egg until a new adult bee emerges\, and even get to hold a bit of wax comb produced by honey bees.\n\nBest yet\, after our introduction to the bees\, the beekeepers-in-training will suit up and get to explore a real life hive\, putting their new education to test by looking for the queen bee and spotting the three developmental stages of honey bees. We will remove some honey comb and get to taste honey straight from the hive! Very limited space\, so register early.\n\n*Parent or guardian of youth ages 7-16 may attend for free. Additional adult participants may purchase a ticket for $25.00. Please contact Liz Cardinal at liz@sustainablefoodcenter.org or 512-236-0074 ext. 131 for information on how to purchase additional tickets.\n\n*Registration closes one business day before class. No walk-ins allowed.

SUMMARY:Free Class: Plant Propagation
DESCRIPTION:From the Natural Gardener –\nTuesday\, May 8th at 10am – “Plant Propagation” with Neil Schmidt.   \nIt is simple and easy to propagate plants.  Some of the most common ways plants are propagated or multiplied are by growing seeds\, root division and stem cuttings.  Neil will discuss which process is most appropriate for specific species.  Do you have a favorite plant you want to share with friends or one you just can’t find anywhere to get more?  Dividing plants and taking cuttings allow you to greatly increase the number of plants you have so they can be shared\, sold or planted in the landscape.  You never knew it could be so simple! \nNeil has experience working as Propagation Specialist for the Ladybird Johnson Wildflower Center and the Info Desk at The Natural Gardener.  Let him get you started on your project!

SUMMARY:Free Class: Urban Permaculture for Austinites
DESCRIPTION:From the Natural Gardener –\nSaturday\, May 12th at 10am – Leah Churner of Delta Dawn Gardens (deltadawngardens.com) presents “Urban Permaculture for Austinites.” \nPermaculture is a design philosophy that borrows the logic of natural systems to create spaces that are self-sustaining\, functional\, and beautiful\, no matter the size. Rather than a list of techniques\, permaculture is a framework for pulling techniques together. If you’ve tried your hand at organic gardening\, rainwater harvesting\, composting\, soil building\, or supporting pollinators\, you’re already on your way to the permaculture mindset! The magic comes in fitting all of these ecological puzzle pieces together into a cohesive whole. \nLeah will introduce you to the concepts of stacking\, chunking\, guilds\, and earthworks\, and present some projects you can try at home here in Austin\, whether you have a big yard\, a small yard\, or no yard at all. Leah is a landscape designer and the host of HOTHOUSE\, a new podcast about gardening\, ecology\, and nature (www.hothousepodcast.com).
