She brings a systems-level perspective to conversations about space\, sustainability\, and community-centered development. \nPanelists \nSteven Gomes\nSteven Gomes is an operations partner at Victory East and Busy Signal\, working at the intersection of culture\, business\, and community activation. DESCRIPTION:Join us on Tuesday March 10th for our March general meeting to socialize with like-minded Austin neighbors and hear a talk about water issues facing the state of Texas. \nThis month we are very excited to be in a new venue\, The Mosaic Workshop in East Austin. Thanks to the folks there for generously offering to host us! \nDoors open at 6:30 for a light dinner and conversation. Club updates and program starts at 7pm. We hope you’ll join us — and bring a friend who cares about Texas’ water future! \nDr. Evgenia Spears\, Water Program Coordinator for the Lone Star Chapter Sierra Club\, will join us via video link to speak on water issues facing the state of Texas. \nWater issues affect all of us — from river flows in Central Texas\, to desalination proposals on the Gulf Coast\, to aging water infrastructure and groundwater depletion across the state. Evgenia will discuss these problems and address the major policy challenges ahead\, including what Sierra Club has done and is doing to protect Texas waters. Through grassroots organizing\, water education\, and legislative advocacy\, she works to ensure that communities across the state have a voice in shaping a sustainable water future. Prior to joining Sierra Club\, Evgenia spent several years at Texas A&M University in College Station\, where she earned a doctorate with a focus on natural resource management\, taught undergraduate courses on natural resource policy\, served as a watershed coordinator with the Texas A&M AgriLife Extension Service\, and developed strategic natural resource planning documents for Texas. Having lived in rural Ukraine\, suburban Russia\, and now in the U.S.\, Evgenia brings a unique perspective on water management\, viewing water not simply as a resource to manage\, but as a relationship to nurture. Outside of her work\, Evgenia enjoys being with her family\, spending time in nature\, and traveling.

Chen’s work reminds us of our collective responsibility to preserve our planet\, and our own ability to undergo renewals and contribute to a more resilient\, harmonious world. \nConnective Tissue is an exhibition that explores the unseen threads that bind us to one another and to ourselves. Through layered paintings and drawings\, this body of work examines themes of identity\, relationships\, and the emotional landscapes we navigate daily. The abstracted forms—fragmented faces\, reaching hands\, and overlapping bodies—become metaphors for the complex and often fragile connections that hold us together. The show invites viewers to reflect on these invisible bonds\, offering a moment of introspection into how we connect\, disconnect\, and seek understanding. \nBuild Me A Garden: From Soil to Surface explores how relationships with land are developed and reimagined through labor\, lineage and living materials. The exhibition uses craft techniques\, abstraction\, materiality\, and sculptural gestures to give form to the intangible: memory\, longing\, belonging\, and the emotional relationship between land and culture. \nDrawing from her lineage in Rajasthan\, India\, Rakhee Jain Desai brings heritage textile knowledge\, natural dyeing\, mordants\, resist techniques\, and ecological processes into conversation with a land that did not birth these traditions but now holds its people. Through the acts of growing dyes in Texas soil\, harvesting plant matter\, and working with natural materials\, Rakhee explores what it means to carry cultural knowledge across geographies and to plant it in new ground\, building a garden of evolving culture and craft practices where color emerges from the chemistry of natural materials\, soil\, water\, and time.

DESCRIPTION:After the Light Leaves is an improvisational dance performance taking place at sunrise and sunset on Sunday\, March 22 at Festival Beach Food Forest by Dance Waterloo. \nFestival Beach Food Forest is a community-grown edible forest garden on public land—created through over a decade of collaboration to nourish\, educate\, and inspire. Spanning nearly 2.5 acres\, it reconnects people with the land\, their food\, and one another through shared stewardship. This performance unfolds within that living system\, celebrating a space sustained by collective care. \nPerforming at sunrise and sunset\, the dancers explore a familiar rhythm: how life feels different depending on when we arrive. Light shifts\, clocks tick\, and what we notice changes with them. Morning and evening offer distinct ways of being present\, each carrying its own pace and tone. \nRather than presenting a fixed story\, the experience invites audiences to move through the forest together\, noticing how time\, light\, and shared presence shape meaning. What unfolds is not something to complete or consume\, but a moment within an ongoing cycle—one shaped by attention\, continuity\, and return. \nThis is an invitation to gather\, to notice\, and to spend time in a place sustained by collective care. \nSupporting Festival Beach Food Forest\nAt checkout\, audiences may add a donation to the FBFF Mitigation Fund — 100% goes directly toward continued care and stewardship of the space.

Hydrilla is a nonnative\, invasive plant. In February\, it was covering approximately 592 acres\, up from 456 acres in September. \nWhen considering hydrilla\, please keep in mind: \n\nAquatic vegetation\, including hydrilla\, can benefit fish and water quality\nHydrilla can grow so fast that it becomes a problem for the environment and our community.\nManaging hydrilla is a complicated balancing act that takes time.\n\nLearn more about hydrilla and plants in Austin’s Lakes or sign up to receive email updates.
