This event is open to members of the Friends of the LBJ Library (at the Individual level and above) and invited guests of the LBJ School for Public Affairs. This program is not open to the general public. \nAbout the speaker \nWilliam McRaven\, former University of Texas System chancellor and retired U.S. Navy four-star admiral\, joined the LBJ School for Public Affairs as a professor in national security in 2018. As chancellor\, he oversaw 14 institutions that educate 221\,000 students and employ 20\,000 faculty and more than 80\,000 health care professionals\, researchers and staff. As the commander of U.S. Special Operations Command\, Admiral McRaven led a force of 69\,000 men and women and was responsible for conducting counter-terrorism operations worldwide. He is a recognized national authority on U.S. foreign policy and has advised presidents George W. Bush and Barack Obama and other U.S. leaders on defense issues. \nAdmiral McRaven oversaw the 2011 Navy SEAL raid in Pakistan that killed al-Qaeda leader Osama bin Laden. His book Spec Ops: Case Studies in Special Operations Warfare: Theory and Practice\, is considered a fundamental text on special operations strategy. He has received the Republic of France’s Legion d’Honneur\, the Federal Law Enforcement Officers Association’s National Award and the National Intelligence Award. In 2016\, he was named the recipient of the Ambassador Richard M. Right To Be’s Bystander Intervention to Support Immigrant Communities Training equips participants with the tools to safely and effectively intervene when they witness anti-immigrant hate\, harassment\, or discrimination. \nUsing Right To Be’s 5Ds of Bystander Intervention methodology—Distract\, Delegate\, Document\, Delay\, and Direct—this interactive training empowers participants to take action while prioritizing safety. Whether it’s witnessing xenophobic comments\, workplace discrimination\, ICE encounters\, or public harassment\, this training provides practical\, real-world strategies to support immigrants facing harm. \nThis training is encouraged for allies\, but everyone is welcome. If you are undocumented or at risk of being targeted by ICE\, we recommend also attending a Know Your Rights training and engaging in safety planning. \nTogether\, we can create a culture of safety\, solidarity\, and dignity for immigrant communities. These projects often require extensive troubleshooting and take up a lot of our volunteers’ time. Instead\, we encourage you to subscribe to the Fix-It Austin newsletter to receive announcements of upcoming workshops focused on electronics repair\, consult the Austin Reuse Directory to find a professional repair shop\, and/or look for a repair guide on the IFixIt website. \nHow it works: Bring up to two items (excluding computers\, cellphones\, and tablets) and work with our coaches to learn how to fix them. Tools will be provided\, but feel free to bring your own. If you know your item needs a replacement part\, please bring it with you. While we can’t guarantee every item will be repaired\, you’ll learn how it works and what you may need to fix it. Colleen is an ISA Certified Arborist and fruit tree expert with over 20 years of professional experience as a gardener and landscaper in Central Texas\, specializing in native plant maintenance. She is a top gardening educator and mentor\, having taught hundreds of workshops and classes. As the host of the ATX Gardens podcast\, she reminds listeners of what to do right now in their gardens and landscapes. The Central Texas Seed Savers is a growing network of people who love seeds\, with a mission to prevent the extinction of ecologically and culinarily important plants in the Central Texas Region. \nTreeFolks was founded as Austin’s Urban Forestry non-profit in 1989. Since then\, TreeFolks has grown to work with communities throughout Central Texas in community tree planting\, tree giveaways\, education\, and urban-wildland reforestation efforts. SUMMARY:Bird Walk with Travis Audubon
DESCRIPTION:Join Rachel Zierzow and TTC Environmental Programs Manager Jonatan Salinas to find birds on the Butler Trail at the Holly Trailhead. Recently planted native trees\, shrubs\, wildflowers\, and natural spring water provide excellent habitats for a variety of bird species. As TTC restores this section of the Butler Trail\, there will be a change in birds\, so you’ll want to come on this monthly walk! \nBird walks are: \n\n1-2 miles long\, completed in around 3 hours\nBeginner-friendly (all levels are welcome)\nOn mostly flat terrain (dissolved gravel trail and sidewalks)\nWe have binoculars to lend to anyone who doesn’t have a pair\n\n  \nRegistration is required and is limited to 10 participants. A reminder email with details will be sent before the bird walk date.

SUMMARY:Nursery and Seed Work at Onion Creek
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a morning of seed-based restoration at the Onion house on the Water Quality Protection Lands (WQPL). These workdays are part of ongoing restoration efforts to establish diverse and resilient grasslands that improve water quality and quantity in the Barton Springs segment of the Edwards Aquifer. \nTasks vary and\, depending on the workday and season\, may include working with seeds and plants in the plant nursery\, processing collected seed\, or venturing out on the property to harvest or sow seed. We will share details with you before each workday. \nThis workday may involve walking over uneven surfaces and through tall vegetation\, carrying and using tools\, working in exposed full sun areas\, and some bending over. Wear closed-toe shoes and bring drinking water and work gloves\, if you have a pair (we’ll have extras). \nDue to the tasks\, nature of the terrain\, and lack of amenities\, these workdays are generally best suited to older youth and adults. There is no running water on site (unless we are working at the house/nursery)\, and pets and smoking are not permitted.
