SUMMARY:Housing Affordability Fair
DESCRIPTION:Join us to connect with housing resources provided by the City of Austin and weigh in on updates to programs that support housing affordability throughout the city. Food\, kids’ activities\, and Spanish interpreters will be provided. Additional accommodations can be requested at registration. Registration is encouraged but not required. \n  \nMore Info: \nThe City of Austin is hosting a one-stop shop where residents can connect with existing housing resources and also weigh in on updates to programs that support housing affordability throughout the city. \nThe Housing Affordability Fair will spotlight the City’s expansive set of programs designed to support Austinites through the challenges of increasing housing costs and maintaining financial stability. Attendees will be able to engage with Austin Housing staff and dozens of program partners about offerings ranging from home repair to rental assistance. Other initiatives designed to move the City forward in meeting our affordability goals include new projects like the Missing Middle and Mixed-Use Zoning Study\, and updates to the Imagine Austin Comprehensive Plan\, the SMART Housing program\, the Austin Strategic Housing Blueprint\, City code that sets requirements when certain housing is redeveloped (known as Chapter 4-18)\, and other tools the City is exploring. \nAdditionally\, Austin Planning will provide information and take community feedback on the proposed Citywide Density Bonus Program.  The Citywide Density Bonus Program is a possible new program that would allow for some types of properties in neighborhoods across the city to develop with modified standards when they provide income-restricted affordable housing in return. This project has been initiated by Council and also proposes to replace some existing programs going forward\, such as Density Bonus 90 (DB90) and Vertical Mixed Use (VMU). \nCommunity members can review the draft proposal for the project and provide feedback throughout the process.  City Council is expected to consider the proposal in May. For more information and to subscribe for updates on the Citywide Density Bonus Program\, visit SpeakUpAustin.org/CitywideDB.

SUMMARY:Edible Plant Walk
DESCRIPTION:Join TreeFolks Young Professionals for a guided foraging hike through one of Austin’s most beautiful green spaces! \nWe’ll explore the trails of Roy G. Guerrero Park and learn how to identify edible and useful plants growing right here in our urban forest. \nWe’ll meet at the Grove Blvd. Trailhead (Country Club Creek Trail) by Field 4\, then head out for a relaxed\, educational walk. Along the way\, we’ll talk about responsible foraging practices\, plant ID tips\, and how trees and understory plants work together to create thriving ecosystems. If time (and the group!) allows\, we may even make a stop by the “secret beach.” \nOur walk will be led by Roxy Huckabee\, a seasoned forager with over 10 years of experience. Roxy is a researcher and curator for Gather: The Foraging App and teaches foraging classes at Earth Native Wilderness School. She brings a wealth of knowledge and a passion for helping others build confidence in identifying and responsibly harvesting wild plants. \nWhether you’re brand new to foraging or just looking for a fun way to spend a spring afternoon outside\, this is a great chance to learn\, connect\, and explore with fellow nature lovers. \nWear comfortable shoes & bring water. Some foraged snacks may be provided 🙂 \n– This event is part of our Earth Month series\, a lineup of outdoor activities designed to get our community outside\, learning\, and giving back to the environment all April long –

SUMMARY:Foreverland PBS Premier
DESCRIPTION:Foreverland\, a new documentary exploring one of Austin’s most ambitious grassroots conservation efforts\, premieres April 15 at 9 p.m. on Austin PBS\, with an encore broadcast April 20 at 10 p.m. \nThe 7-mile Barton Creek Greenbelt is beloved by all who visit. Its deep canyon flanked by rugged trails and framed by limestone cliffs provides a respite from the hectic pace of daily life just minutes from downtown. Prior to 1970\, the entire area was privately owned. That it exists today as public open space is the result of determined civic action—largely unknown to those who enjoy it. \nIn 1991\, while the grassroots Save Our Springs movement drew national attention for landmark water-quality protections along Barton Creek\, a smaller coalition pursued a parallel strategy: purchasing private land to secure it permanently for public use. \nSome within the environmental community opposed this approach\, labeling it a“developer buyout.” But supporters believed that preservation of this environmentally sensitive resource—home to rare flora and fauna and critical to the aquifer that feedsBartonSprings—could only be guaranteed through outright acquisition. The group recruited a City Council sponsor\, secured a place on the 1992 bond ballot\, and painstakingly negotiated land deals parcel by parcel\, ultimately assembling nearly 1\,000acres of protected public space. \nFeaturing archival footage\, original interviews\, and meticulous historical research\, Foreverland highlights the leadership and persistence of former City Council MemberBeverly Griffith; parks planner Butch Smith; conservation advocate Ted Siff; and George Cofer\, co-founder of the Hill Country Conservancy. \nProduced by Karen Kocher\, creator of theLiving Springs documentary series\, with marketing and communications professional and filmmaker Monica Flores\, Foreverland is a sequel to the 2020 award-winningOrigins of a Green Identity\, which reached more than 26\,000 households. Free public screenings and educational materials for teachers and community organizations will accompany the broadcast. \nBroadcast:April 15 at 9 p.m.; encore April 20 at 10 p.m. on Austin PBS \nStreaming: April 23 via the Living Springs YouTube Channel
