SUMMARY:Summer Nights All Gender Clothing Swap
DESCRIPTION:On August 4\, 2022\, GOOD group ATX (FKA GOOD girls ATX) is hosting an all gender clothing swap at The Sekrit Theater. There will be a plus-sized section and drinks by Blue Norther.\n\n \nAll are welcome to join\, and participants must drop off items the week before the event in order to secure their spot. Scroll for details & instructions!\n  \nWhy swap your clothes with us? \nWe all deserve a wardrobe that suits our lifestyle & personality\, but neither our planet nor its people should suffer for it. The fashion industry is notoriously exploitative of natural resources & human labor. Furthermore\, less than 15% of clothes that are donated ever get re-homed? Most of it gets thrown away due to condition\, quality or oversupply. So how can we evolve our personal styles without feeling guilty about it?\n\n \nBuying & selling at local resale shops or pop-ups is a great option because it gives your less-worn items a better chance at being re-homed & allows you to find new-to-you items while avoiding most of the initial harm caused by garment production. It also supports your local economy! Still\, it can take multiple trips & use up a lot of your time to get items sold or find the perfect addition to your wardrobe.\n\n \nParticipating in a clothing swap enables you to connect deeper with your community\, meet new people & refresh your wardrobe at no cost (financial\, environmental or social)!\n\n \nHow the Clothing Swap works: \n— Gather up to 10 warm weather clothing items + accessories in good condition\, wash them & place them in a bag. (Please avoid using fresh garbage bags.)\n— Anytime between Tuesday 7/26 & Wednesday 8/3\, bring your items to the Future Front TX headquarters\, 916 Springdale Road Trailer #6 within the Canopy Complex. You’ll see a clearly marked bin with instructions on how to confirm your drop off & secure your spot at the swap.\n— On Thursday\, 8/4 arrive at The Sekrit Theater & check in with the GOOD group ATX. Doors open at 6:30 PM and the swap last for about an hour.\n— Take what you need\, keep things tidy\, lend a hand & make new friends!\n  \nFrequently Asked Questions \nWhat types of items are you swapping? \nWe are accepting no more than 10 clean\, gently-used warm weather clothing\, accessories\, swimsuits & shoes of all genders & sizes from each person. We cannot accept winter coats or heavy sweaters for this swap- please save those for future swaps.\n\n \nIf you have more than 10 items you’d like to swap\, contact us & we can help you decide which items to bring & how to re-home the rest.\n  \nHow do I drop off my items? \nAnytime between Tuesday 7/26 & Wednesday 8/3\, bring your clean items in a bag to the Future Front TX headquarters\, 916 Springdale Road Trailer #6* within the Canopy Complex. You’ll see a clearly marked bin with instructions on how to confirm your drop off & secure your spot at the swap.\n\n \nWe require clothes be dropped off before the day of the clothing swap so we can maximize event efficiency & impacts though data collection & quality control. If you require special accommodations for dropping off\, contact us to create a plan.\n\n \n*The trailer is catty-corner to Building 4\, which is located within the back parking lot behind Sa-Ten in Building 2.\n  \nHow does a GOOD group ATX swap work? \nWe set up the space like a pop-up\, organized by item type & inclusive size range. We operated on a “bring what you can\, take what you need” basis. We encourage everyone to arrive at 6:30 PM to allow time to check in\, hear some important messages & have the best selection of items to swap.\n\n \nAfter the swap has ended\, we re-home all of the leftover items & calculate the estimated environmental\, social & economic impact of the event. We publish this along with insights & observations in each clothing swap’s GOOD Report.\n\n \nUltimately\, you can come whenever! All are welcome\, but we ask that only those who have dropped off items prior to the event leave with items.\n  \nWhere is the swap? \nThe pavilion at The Sekrit Theater: 1145 Perry Rd\, Austin\, TX 78721\nStreet parking is available in the surrounding neighborhood & it is accessible by bike.\n  \nWill I be able to try things on? \nThere are restrooms available\, but most people wear clothes that are easy to try things on over or under like leggings + tanks or loose dresses/skirts.\n  \nWhat do you do with the swap leftovers? \nThe majority of the leftovers will go to Val Verde Border Humanitarian Coalition\, “a group of local citizens and agencies that have united to develop an efficient way to transition refugees to their destinations upon release of federal custody through a unified and coordinated effort.”\n\n \nWe may end up selling some items to local resale shops & use those funds to support the growth of GOOD group ATX. We’re currently fundraising to trademark our brand and register as a nonprofit.\n\n \nLearn more about Val Verde Border Humanitarian Coalition here.

SUMMARY:30 years of Saving Our Springs
DESCRIPTION:On August 8th\,1992 Austin voters approved the SOS ordinance in “a landslide.” Read the headlines on Karen Kocher’s wonderful Barton Creek Timestream (http://ow.ly/iLb750Ka4Oo) and watch our original campaign video by Dean Rindy and others (http://ow.ly/FVaW50Ka4Om). It fully stands the test of time\, just like the SOS ordinance and the community that loves and supports our Hill Country land\, water and wildlife.\n\n\n \n\nNext Monday\, on August 8th\, we will celebrate 30 years of citizen action to save our springs at Barton Springs\, swimming and visiting all day and honoring the occasion with a bit of music\, refreshments\, and ceremony at the front gate from 6 to 7:30 p.m.\n\n\n \n\nThe Minor Mishap Marching Band will kick off the event\, and Mr. Habitat\, Bill Oliver\, will be there to lead a few rounds of Barton Springs Eternal.\n\n\n \n\nPlease come reconnect or connect for the first time.\n\n\n \n\nWith your help we will finish what we started 30 years ago in the days\, weeks\, months\, and years ahead. It takes a community to save a community spring!\n\n\n \n\nAnd in the meantime\, don’t forget the fabulous Sacred Springs Kite Exhibit at Austin’s downtown library (http://ow.ly/XHVh50Ka4On).

SUMMARY:UWSA August 2022 Unlearning Circle
DESCRIPTION:We invite you to join us for our upcoming Unlearning Circle on Sat\, August 13\, 2022\, where we will continue to explore our role in building accountable communities.\n \nIn previous Unlearning Circles we have explored safety and policing\, the policing that is (or is not) happening in our communities\, its historical roots\, and some alternatives to calling the police. As white people\, we are conditioned to believe that the police can both protect us from unsafe situations and from having to see and engage with people’s suffering (e.g. homelessness\, untreated mental illness\, poverty\, etc). We can be so deeply conditioned to avoid others’ suffering that we may not even realize the suffering that exists in our neighborhoods and the communities we are a part of. Addressing the root causes of suffering in our communities would involve building community and working together to address these uncomfortable\, messy realities.\n \nYet we are not taught how to build these relationships in our own communities\, and are even encouraged to prioritize individualism\, which in part is “a belief that you are responsible for and are qualified to solve problems on your own” (https://www.whitesupremacyculture.info/individualism.html). In our August Unlearning Circle we will discuss our comfort levels with the idea of building and strengthening relationships within our various communities\, what barriers exist to creating more belonging in those communities\, and what opportunities lie in working through those barriers.\n \nThis Unlearning Circle is for anyone interested–you do not need to have come to prior Unlearning Circles in order to join us on August 13.\n \nWe encourage you to review these resources in advance: \n\nWhite Supremacy Culture – Individualism\n \n10 Ways to Build Community \nRecommendations for Building a Community-Based Public Safety and Health Ecosystem \n\nAbout our Unlearning Circles – \nUWSA’s first Unlearning Circle in the winter of 2017 was created as a place for white people to do the work of reflection and community self-education. As we continue to gather to critically examine our own participation in cultures of dominance\, we build our capacity to show up as individuals and as a city-wide community network for Black\, Indigenous and people of color-led anti-racist efforts in a positive and accountable way. The Unlearning Circles are an opportunity for white identifying people to explore white supremacy culture and our role and responsibilities in undoing racism. We welcome and recognize the gift of the presence of any People of Color who choose to join us.
