In 1965\, Volma Overton\, Sr. marched alongside Reverend Martin Luther King\, Jr. in the Selma to Montgomery March.\n \nVolma Overton. Sr.’s commitment to justice included reforming Austin and Central Texas’ local institutions. One of his many other accomplishments included desegregating the Austin Independent School District through a lawsuit he filed in 1970\, which named his daughter\, DeDra\, as the lead plaintiff. Additionally\, he fought alongside Boy Scout Troop #70 to integrate the swimming pool at Bastrop State Park in 1963.\n \nVolma Overton’s\, Sr.’s philanthropic efforts included a mentoring program for youth at Oak Springs Elementary\, as well as the conversion of the Overton House into a community center for African Americans in Austin.\n \nVolma Overton\, Sr. received accolades and awards for his pioneering civil rights work including NAACP Arthur B. DeWitty Award\, The Villager newspaper’s Austin Living Legends Award\, and University of Texas LBJ Award for Leadership in Civil Rights.\n \nVolma Overton\, Sr. was laid to rest with military honors at the Texas State Cemetery alongside governors\, senators\, legislators\, congressional leaders\, judges and other legendary Texans. SUMMARY:SBCA June Virtual Happy Hour with Austin Water Utilities
DESCRIPTION:MONDAY 6/13 @ 7pm on Zoom Monthly Happy Hour is back! \nThanks for staying tuned as we took a break last month. This June we are joined by Helen Gerlach and Marisa Flores-Gonzalez of City of Austin’s Water Utilities Department. Helen and Marisa will be discussing Austin Water’s Aquifer Storage Recovery Project. ASR is a storage strategy that other water utilities in Texas and around the world use to store water in a natural aquifer when it is available during wet times\, and withdraw the stored water during times when other supplies are needed. ASR will improve Austin’s climate resiliency as a second source of water in drought or emergency situations. Invite your friends and see you there!

SUMMARY:Climate Feedback Loops Program: Three Films and a Panel Discussion with Local Climate Organizations' Leaders
DESCRIPTION:At the Sierra Club’s monthly Climate Crisis Committee meeting\, which is open to everyone and will also be available on Zoom\, we’ll plunge into feedback loops and tipping points\, processes that could dramatically accelerate global warming. That these processes have started is clear but when they might hit critical levels is a big unknown.\n \nLast year\, a series of five short educational films about Feedback Loops was introduced in a program with Greta Thunberg and the Dalai Lama. At this introduction\, Greta said\, “We cannot solve the climate emergency without taking these feedback loops into account and without really understanding them. That is a crucial step.”\n \nAt our Climate Crisis Committee Meeting on July 5\, we will watch three of these films (total 45 minutes)\, the ones on the Tundra\, Albedo\, and Forests. Following the films\, local climate leaders will discuss their reactions to these films\, why (and whether) understanding feedback loops is important to climate activists\, and how their particular organizations can use this information in their work. We will conclude with a whole group discussion.

SUMMARY:State legislators and the future of transportation
DESCRIPTION:State legislatures are a key partner in the provision of the transportation systems and services that drive metro area regions and their economies. State governments and their local government partners are responsible for nearly three-quarters of total U.S. expenditures on transportation\, and that share has been increasing over time.\n \n\nOn Monday\, July 11\, Brookings Metro will host an event exploring the future of U.S. transportation policy through a state-level lens. Speakers will highlight findings from a recent University of Texas study surfacing how lawmakers are framing the prospects for state-level policy innovation\, particularly with respect to transportation funding and energy transition. A panel of state legislators will follow\, discussing their priorities\, strategies for aligning key stakeholders\, and how new federal funding is affecting legislative agenda-setting.\n \n\nUT Professors Andrew Waxman and Gian-Claudia Sciara will discuss findings from their recent study\, Decarbonizing the City – Financing and Policy Solutions for Transportation\, as part of a discussion with state legislators working on transportation policy.
