SUMMARY:Zebra Mussels In The Colorado: Barstow Speaker Series
DESCRIPTION:From the Colorado River Alliance –\nZebra Mussels in the Texas Colorado River: Status\, Threats\, and Potential Solutions\nOn Friday\, June 15th\, please join the Colorado River Alliance for a lunchtime presentation on some very unwelcome new arrivals in the Colorado River — invasive zebra mussels. These highly destructive and prolific critters were first confirmed in our river last summer\, and now they’re in Lake Travis\, Lake Austin\, and Lady Bird Lake. How bad is the threat\, and what can we do? Join us to get your questions answered. \nThis event will be held from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Austin Board of Realtors’ Canyon View Event Center (map). Speakers include Monica McGarrity\, Aquatic Invasive Species Team Leader for Texas Parks & Wildlife; Stephen Davis\, the LCRA biologist who leads monitoring efforts across the Colorado River basin; and John Higley\, CEO and Principal Scientist at Environmental Quality Operations (EQO)\, a start-up that is developing new technologies to help us address the zebra mussel challenge. \nThe discussion will include what zebra mussels are and how they got here\, the economic and environmental threats they pose\, what boat owners and lakefront-property owners need to know\, the latest updates on where they’ve been found\, and how new tech tools may help us monitor zebra mussels and potentially even control their spread. \nYour $40 ticket includes lunch. \nTables and sponsorships are available: Click through to ticketing for more details on sponsorships\, or contact Durel Bernard\, durel@coloradoriver.org. \nAbout the Barstow Speaker Series\nFor eleven years\, the Colorado River Alliance’s Barstow Speaker Series has hosted energetic and important conversations about water issues and the future of the Texas Colorado River. In a Barstow event\, a recognized speaker or group of panelists shares information about a current issue\, followed by a candid question-and-answer session with guests. Guests typically include water leaders\, policymakers\, academics\, and representatives of the business\, conservation\, and philanthropic communities. \nA big THANK YOU goes out to our partner for this event\, the Austin Board of Realtors\, along with program sponsors Texas Gas Service\, The Barstow Foundation\, and The Trull Foundation.

SUMMARY:Sierra Club Book Club - "Last Child In The Woods"
DESCRIPTION:From the Sierra Club –\nJune’s book is “Last Child in the Woods: Saving Our Children From Nature-Deficit Disorder” by Richard Louv. This is one of my personal favorites. \nFrom the author’s website:\n“In this influential work about the staggering divide between children and the outdoors\, child advocacy expert Richard Louv directly links the lack of nature in the lives of today’s wired generation—he calls it nature-deficit—to some of the most disturbing childhood trends\, such as the rises in obesity\, attention disorders\, and depression. \nLast Child in the Woods is the first book to bring together a new and growing body of research indicating that direct exposure to nature is essential for healthy childhood development and for the physical and emotional health of children and adults. More than just raising an alarm\, Louv offers practical solutions and simple ways to heal the broken bond—and many are right in our own backyard.” \nJuly’s book is “The World is Blue: How Our Fate and the Ocean’s Are One” by Sylvia Earl. Sylvia Earl is a modern day Jacques Cousteau. She is one of the most knowledgeable experts on the ocean as you’d ever find. She goes over the biggest issues affecting the ocean and then addresses what we can do to address them. \n*The book club will be in Zilker Park at the Rock Garden Picnic Area (just uphill from the Zilker Outdoor Theater*

SUMMARY:Barton Springs Eternal Reunion
DESCRIPTION:From the Save Barton Creek Association and the Save Our Springs Alliance –\nIn April 1992 a group of Austin musicians\, artists and activists recorded the song “Barton Springs Eternal” (by Bill Oliver)\, in a colorful\, fun-filled two day session at Cedar Creek Studios in South Austin. The video version has now been edited (thanks to Jenny Clark and Fred Remmert) into a lively\, all star Austin effort that retains the energy of the era and the importance of the movement. At the time\, a 17 minute video documentary\, “I Sung for the Springs” about the session was produced for ACTV by Jenny Clark. That program has been revived from the city archives\, dusted off\, and digitized! \nThis calls for a celebration! We’re hosting a “video launch and reunion party” for Thursday\, June 21\, 6–8 and 8-10 (two shows) at Threadgill’s South. We’ll show the videos\, and have a sound system in place for any “special guests” musicians to perform. Bob Livingston and Bill Oliver will kick off the music. This will be a fun reunion\, an update on current Barton Springs issues from SOS / SBCA and a great party! \nHosted by Bill Oliver\, Bob Livingston\, Save Barton Springs\, Save Barton Creek\nYou can view the music video here: https://youtu.be/sdtMZs7ISnU \nYou can view the documentary video here: https://youtu.be/CCUintWdzl4 \nYou can purchase Barton Springs Eternal here:https://sosalliance.bandcamp.com/track/barton-springs-eternal
