SUMMARY:Anti-Asian Bias\, Racism\, and Its Impact on Our Mental Health
DESCRIPTION:Our next BRAVE Communities Conversation will be held in-person & live-streamed on BRAVE Communities Facebook on Tuesday\, May 31st from 6:00pm – 7:30pm.\n(doors open at 5:30pm)\nSpicewood Springs Library\n8637 Spicewood springs Rd.\n\n \nA survey released in October by the National Alliance for Mental Illness (NAMI) found that 77 percent of Asian Americans with mood disorders reported struggling to talk about their condition compared to 69 percent of white people.\n\n \nFor many Asian Americans the struggle with mental health has increased along with the 149% increase of hate incidents since the pandemic began. Anti-Asian xenophobia in the U.S dates all the way back to the 19th century. To this very day Asian Americans suffer from harassment rooted in our racist history.\n\n \nJoin us as we discuss anti-Asian biases\, racism\, and it’s impact on mental health\, so we can combat the stigma against seeking out care for your mental health– which prevents many communities of color from getting the help they need and most importantly deserve. And\, we’ll be celebrating local people and organizations that have been uplifting our Communities of Color with mental health care services.\n\n \nInvite your Auntie\, neighbor\, co-worker\, or classmate to come listen\, unlearn\, and relearn from our panelists as we build commUNITY. Q&A with interactive community engagement activities will be held at the end of the discussion.\n\n \nHear from our Panelists:\n— Bri Liu – LPC\, Lead Therapist\, YWCA\n— Mohit P. Mehta – PhD Candidate & Assistant Instructor\, College of Education/Center for Asian American Studies\, UT Austin\n— Zahra Shakurjamal – Director of Prevention\, Community Outreach and Education of AFSSA\n— Moderator: Faylyn Wang\, Westlake HS student\, BRAVE Ambassador (2021)\, BRAVE Makers (’20\, ’21)\n\n \n**And\, Ascension Seton will be on-site administering free Pfzier vaccinations/boosters for 5+ year old**

SUMMARY:Fix-It Clinic
DESCRIPTION:Bring your favorite things back to life at this Fix-It Clinic hosted by Austin Creative Reuse through the City of Austin’s Fix-It Austin Partner program.\n \nWhat’s a Fix-It Clinic? \nIs there a fallen hem in your favorite shirt? Did your sewing machine stop working? Has the chain on your necklace broken? Bring these items and more to our next Fix-It Clinic to learn how to fix your broken items from skilled volunteer coaches — for free!\n \nWhile we can’t guarantee your item will be fixed\, coaches will guide you through how the item works and what you may need for repair. Attendees are expected to actively participate and stay with their items during the repair process. Dropping items off is not allowed.\n \nWhat should I bring? \nYour broken item(s) and a desire to improve your repair skills! You may bring up to two items. Tools will be available for you to use\, but you can also bring your own tools if you prefer. Please bring any replacement part\, missing button\, fabric patch\, matching thread or other material you might need to help you fix your item. We will also have materials available through our center.\n \nAt this Fix-It Clinic\, we’ll be focusing on: \n\nSewing machines and sergers\nCreative clothing repairs and patching\nJewelry repair\n\nWho can attend?\n \nAll ages are welcome\, but children under the age of 13 must be accompanied by a parent or guardian. Fix-It Clinics are a great learning opportunity for children ages 7 and up!\n \nHow do I sign up? \nRight here! You may reserve up to two tickets based on your broken item and arrival time. One ticket = one item. If you are registering for other family members\, you may select up to two tickets per participant. Please register tickets under the name of the person who will be working on the item. We will have a list of who has registered at the check-in booth\, so no need for you to print your confirmation.\n \nWhat if the clinic is sold out for the item I want to bring? \nIf your preferred ticket is sold out\, you may still come to the Fix-It Clinic with your item. We will do our best to accommodate you\, but we cannot guarantee the availability of coaches. Check Austin Resource Recovery’s official web page for an announcement of the next one!\n \nCan I volunteer at the clinic? \nWe are always looking for individuals with repair skills to become Fix-It Coaches! To sign up as a repair coach for our Clinic\, visit our volunteer sign-up platform online and claim a spot.\n \nThis is an indoor clinic\, masks are optional\, but encouraged. \nAfter the clinic\, stick around to enjoy a free screening of the new SCRAP documentary in ACR’s side parking lot.\n \nAbout ACR: \nAustin Creative Reuse (ACR) is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization. Our mission is to foster conservation and reuse through creativity\, education and community building. We opened Austin’s first and only creative reuse center in September 2015. SUMMARY:Coral Reefs & Climate: Sierra Club Monthly Climate Meeting
DESCRIPTION:The Austin Sierra Club will have its first in-person meeting in two and a half years Tuesday\, June 7 at 7 pm at the First Unitarian Universalist Church at 4700 Grover Ave. We will also stream the meeting via Zoom. Connect on Zoom at: https://us02web.zoom.us/j/5133069449\n \nCO2 levels have overshot 420 ppm for the first time in several million years. The climate crisis isn’t waiting for us to get our act together. The power of oil takes no time off. We need to act now! We need everyone who can to help in this fight. Come see if the Sierra Club has a role that fits what you want to do to fight climate change. Discussion: 7:00 – 7:30 pm\n \nPresentation: Coral Reefs and Climate Change by Juli Berwald\, author of Life on the Rocks and Spineless\, 7:30 – 8:30 pm\n \nCoral reefs are a microcosm of our planet: extra-ordinarily diverse\, deeply interconnected\, and full of wonders. When they’re thriving\, these fairy gardens hidden beneath the ocean’s surface burst with color and life. They sustain bountiful ecosystems and protect vulnerable coasts. But corals across the planet are in the middle of an unprecedented die-off\, beset by warming oceans\, pollution\, damage by humans\, and a devastating pandemic.

SUMMARY:Reconstructing Environmental (In)Justice
DESCRIPTION:Environmental injustice refers to the uneven distribution of environmental benefits and burdens based primarily on race\, but also other marginalizing factors such as income and gender. In this conversation\, Dr. Bruno will describe how this phenomenon spans across Texas and its history\, with a focus on Port Arthur\, Texas\, where the largest petrochemical refinery in the Northern Hemisphere is nestled within a Black community.\n\n \nTianna Bruno is a Provost’s Early Career Postdoctoral Fellow in the Department of Geography and the Environment at the University of Texas at Austin. Her research focuses on the intersection of Black geographies\, environmental justice\, and critical physical geography. Her research also uses environmental records\, to highlight the mutual experiences of degradation and survival between Black communities and their surrounding ecologies.\n\n \nTime: 7:00 – 7:40 p.m.\nThe event will be streamed live and will include a Q&A session with Dr. Bruno.

SUMMARY:SBCA June Virtual Happy Hour with Austin Water Utilities
DESCRIPTION:MONDAY 6/13 @ 7pm on Zoom Monthly Happy Hour is back! \nThanks for staying tuned as we took a break last month. This June we are joined by Helen Gerlach and Marisa Flores-Gonzalez of City of Austin’s Water Utilities Department. Helen and Marisa will be discussing Austin Water’s Aquifer Storage Recovery Project. ASR is a storage strategy that other water utilities in Texas and around the world use to store water in a natural aquifer when it is available during wet times\, and withdraw the stored water during times when other supplies are needed. ASR will improve Austin’s climate resiliency as a second source of water in drought or emergency situations. Invite your friends and see you there!
