SUMMARY:Walk the Talk
DESCRIPTION:Imagine Austin and the AIA Austin designvoice committee present: Walk the Talk #3 – Panel and Tour of Missing Middle in Clarksville. This is the third in a series of panels and tours of “missing middle” housing in neighborhoods across Austin. \nThe panel will feature speakers who can touch on the history of Clarksville\, fair housing\, historic preservation\, and the role CodeNEXT and the new LDC has in advancing our city’s growth through sustainable and\, when appropriate\, denser models of housing. The idea to further educate the audience on the role missing middle housing typologies play in creating a more compact\, connected\, and affordable city. How does this tie into the broader scope of multi-modal transportation\, income diversity\, and preserving neighborhood character while also allowing for denser housing to help “fill the gap.”? \nThe panelists are: \nJim Robertson – City of Austin/CodeNEXT \nMary Reed – President of Clarksville Community Development Corporation. \nJessi Koch – City of Austin/Neighborhood Housing & Community Development \nJohn Henneberger – 2014 MacArthur Foundation Fellow\, Texas Low Income Housing Information Service \nThis is the third in a series of panel discussions and housing tours focused on “Missing Middle’ Housing. If you’re curious what “missing middle” housing is\, visit www.missingmiddlehousing.com.  You might already live in a missing middle type house\, have them in your neighborhood\, or know someone who lives in one. \nThis panel and tour endeavors to explore what missing middle housing is\, what it looks like and what it means for our community.  At each tour and panel we learn the challenges and opportunities that a diverse housing stock presents\, and visibly what those housing types look like on a neighborhood level. \nIf you weren’t able to join Imagine Austin on the first two panels and tours\, check out these links for the presentations and the video (only available for the 2nd event): \nhttp://www.austintexas.gov/blog/walk-talk-missing-middle-panel-presentations \nhttp://www.austintexas.gov/blog/walk-talk-2-panelists-presentations-and-video

SUMMARY:Austin Don't Rush Day
DESCRIPTION:From the Austin Mayor’s Office –\nThis Wednesday\, May 11th is Austin Don’t Rush day. Please do everything you can to avoid driving by yourself during rush hour(s). Here are some ideas and resources: \nFlex your schedule: Instead of driving during rush hour\, go to work before or after 7:00am – 9:00am\, and return home before or after 4:00pm – 6:00pm. Note: For your maximum comfort\, if you have the additional flexibility\, you have greater odds of more tolerable congestion if you arrive outside the hours of 7:00am -9:30am and depart outside 4:00pm – 7:00pm. (see also\, Smart Start and Enjoy your Environs) \nSmart Start: Spend the first hour or so working from home. You can check and respond to voicemails and emails\, or get some focused work done. Then head in to work after the traffic has died down. You could do the reverse at the end of the day too. \nEnjoy your environs: If you have the flexibility\, before heading home spend a few hours after work exploring local shops\, meeting others for happy hour\, having a meal or taking in some entertainment. That way you can enjoy both your evening and your commute. \nUse transit: Find out if there’s a Capital Metro transit route that would work for you by going to capmetro.org where you’ll find an easy-to-use Trip Planner or download the Capital Metro app (which also provides a trip planner and real-time departure info). To support you in giving transit a try\, Capital Metro is waiving all fares for buses and the train on May 11th. They are also running extra MetroRail service that day. \nRide a bike: A bike ride can get you to work having enjoyed some fresh air and saved you from having to schedule a separate workout. If you don’t live very close\, try combining your bike with a bus or train ride for the long haul to help make cycling feasible. Capital Metro buses and the trains all have capacity to carry multiple bikes. Bonus: having your bike handy gives you flexibility to move around once at work. \nShare a ride: Maybe you know someone at work who lives close to you. If not\, ask around. Maybe your work colleague is a neighbor and you don’t even know it. Capital Metro’s MetroRideShare program supports Van/SUV pools for people groups of 5-12 riders heading to the same location or vicinity. \nTelework: If you have a job that doesn’t require your physical presence at the workplace\, you might find that you are even more productive working from home. Make a plan ahead of time so that you take necessary material or equipment home with you the day before. If working from home is not optimal consider a co-working space near you. \nLeverage your mobility resources: In addition to taxis\, TNCs and pedicabs\, many areas of town have short-term vehicle and bike rental services that help make getting around easier if you didn’t drive your own vehicle to work. See below for a variety of services offering promotions\, including free B-cycle trips all day! \nSpecial Offers During Austin Don’t Rush \nCapital Metro is offering free rides on all services on May 11th including MetroBus\, MetroRapid\, MetroExpress\, UT Shuttle\, MetroRail\, MetroAccess. \nAustin B-cycle will offer a free day pass! On May 11\, 2016 riders simply select “Buy $8 pass” at any B-cycle station and enter the promo code 051116 when prompted. The $8 Walkup Pass fee will be waived. \nMetropia – an app that helps you plan your travel and avoid traffic. Bonus points that can be redeemed for prizes for app users on 5/11 who Flex (travel outside 7-9am and 4-6pm) and/or DUO to use their carpool feature. \nDowntown Austin Alliance – social media posts that use #AustinDontRush will be entered in a drawing for some spending money at the Downtown Street Fair. \nZipcar – Anyone that signs up to become a Zipcar member between now and May 11 at www.zipcar.com/atxcommutechallenge can join for $15. They will also include $25 of driving credit to help get you started. (This is designed to support folks who take transit or carpool to get to work but still need a vehicle during the day.) \nCar2go – In preparation for “Austin Don’t Rush” go to car2go and use promo code C2G15 and get FREE registration (regularly $35) and 15 FREE drive time minutes. Allow 2-4 days for membership activation. \nCARTS – (Capital Area Rural Transportation Service) is offering free service all day May 11th on their 9 regional commuter services routes and their fixed route bus services in Bastrop and San Marcos. www.ridecarts.com \nGet more details at AustinDontRush.com

SUMMARY:SH 45 SW Informational Meeting
DESCRIPTION:The Friends of the Wildflower Center are hosting an initial informational meeting next Wednesday\, May 18th\, from 6:30 to 8:00 p.m. at the Circle C community center\, 7817 LaCrosse Ave\, 78739. The public is invited. \nThe Friends group is made of Wildflower Center volunteers\, donor/members\, and former board members committed to protecting the Center from the noise\, air\, water\, and visual pollution that would be caused by the proposed SH 45 SW/Mopac South toll loop project. They are not affiliated with the Wildflower Center or the University of Texas. \nThe group is one of 12 plaintiffs\, including two former Austin mayors\, who pdf filed suit (1.66 MB) in late February against the Texas Dept. of Transportation and their toll road agency partner\, CTRMA. The action seeks to protect the tranquility and visitor experience of the Center and to require a comprehensive federal environmental study on the proposed 17-mile toll loop project before any part of the loop project is built. \nGo to The Friends of the Wildflower Center website for more information. At the website please sign their email petition to Governor Abbott\, the Texas Transportation Commission\, and U. T. President Greg Fenves urging them to step back from the proposed 45SW/Mopac South toll loop project and instead invest in improving I-35 and converting the SH 130 toll road into a free and functional I-35 alternative and preferred growth corridor.
