SUMMARY:Free Class: Infused Liquor And Shrub Making
DESCRIPTION:From the Natural Gardener –\nTuesday\, September 18th at 10am – Neil Schmidt presents “Infused Liquor and Shrub Making”.   \nOne way to use this year’s harvest of herbs\, fruits and veggies is to create amazing combinations to infuse flavor into liquor.  Infusing alcohol is very easy and takes very little time on your part\, taking at least a few weeks but mostly sitting in the cabinet.  These then can be used to make incredible top shelf cocktails of almost any flavor. \nHow does a Habanero-Bacon infused vodka for an out-of-sight Bloody-Mary sound!  Or Cucumber-Mint vodka for Mojitos or Fresh Ginger infused vodka for a Moscow Mule with a real Kick!  And this is just the beginning of what you can do!  Another way to add flavor to cocktails is “Shrubs” a colonial era mixture of herbs\, fruit and vinegars.  This sweet\, sour and tart concoction adds amazing depth to cocktails as well as non-alcoholic drinks. Let’s use our harvest to make new and interesting things!  Come join us!

SUMMARY:Sierra Club Book Club: Desert Solitaire
DESCRIPTION:From the Sierra Club –\nWe’ll be meeting to discuss the book “Desert Solitaire” by Edward Abbey. This book has been suggested to read by other nature-lovers and Amazon.com\, multiple times over and over again. So I’m pleased to read this book. It is up there with great works of environmental literature as Silent Spring. It’s said to be on of the books that transformed the genre of naturalist studies into manifestoes for social change. \nAmazon.com describes is as: “Written while Abbey was working as a ranger at Arches National Park outside of Moab\, Utah\, Desert Solitaire is a rare view of one man’s quest to experience nature in its purest form.\nThrough prose that is by turns passionate and poetic\, Abbey reflects on the condition of our remaining wilderness and the future of a civilization that cannot reconcile itself to living in the natural world as well as his own internal struggle with morality. As the world continues its rapid development\, Abbey’s cry to maintain the natural beauty of the West remains just as relevant today as when this book was written.” \nOctober’s book will be “Walkable City: How Downtown Can Save America\, One Step at a Time”\, by Jeff Speck. You’re going to want to read this. GoodReads says\, “In this essential new book\, Speck reveals the invisible workings of the city\, how simple decisions have cascading effects\, and how we can all make the right choices for our communities.” \nAt the end of every book club meeting we discuss possible next books and vote on them. \n*We’re meeting at the “Rock Garden” picnic tables. These are located uphill from the Zilker Hillside Theater*

SUMMARY:Living Springs Back-to-School Documentary Screening
DESCRIPTION:From the Living Springs Documentary –\nCome spread your blanket and enjoy a selection of short films (45 minutes total) from the on-going Living Springs documentary series. On Wednesday\, September 19th\, Living Springs\, in collaboration with Splash! will feature Wildlands and A Reflecting Pool. \nWildlands showcases Austin’s water quality protection lands that Austin voters purchased through open space bonds to protect the aquifer. Learn about the diversity\, history and significance of these protected lands. \nA Reflecting Pool recounts Barton’s history from 1912-1962 through the memories of those who lived it. This documentary showcases wonderful archival photos\, film and original historic re-creations. The story follows the memories of swimmers such as John Henry Faulk exploring the little-known history of Barton Springs before\, during and after the time of racial segregation in Austin. \nCity of Austin environmental educators and local environmental groups will be on hand before the screening to talk about how you can get involved in community efforts to support the Springs\, creeks and aquifer through volunteering and internships. \nWe will gather at 7:15 p.m. (near the big tree at the south entrance\, Azie Morton (formerly Robert E. Lee) Road. The screening will begin at full dark and last approximately 40 minutes. Bring a chair or blanket to sit on. Before or after the screening\, take a swim in the Springs! \nAbout Living Springs: Many stories emanate from the spring-fed water of Barton Springs. Using the power of a multi-linear\, user-driven format\, viewers navigate through a virtual underwater environment\, meeting artists and scientists\, historic figures\, poets and preachers who share their perspectives and their passions about Austin’s most beloved natural resource. Living Springs is the newest documentary from Austin Past and Present producer\, Karen Kocher. Living Springs. For more information visit our website livingspringsaustin.org

SUMMARY:PARK(ing) Day ATX
DESCRIPTION:From the City of Austin Transportation Department –\nParking spaces can be your playground for a day! Austin Transportation invites the public to transform parking spaces into temporary miniature parks\, or “parklets\,” for PARK(ing) Day on Friday\, Sept. 21. PARK(ing) Day is an annual\, worldwide event that promotes public engagement and dialogue on the need for public\, open spaces in urban areas. Austin residents have created numerous parklets of different shapes\, sizes and uses on PARK(ing) Days past\, and Austin Transportation encourages the public to continue this creative dialogue this year. \nWant to organize a parklet? Be sure to read the application packet for instructions on permit request and proper parklet setup: bit.ly/parkingdayatx18. The deadline for submission is Monday\, Sept. 17. Participants must pay $35 for the permit fee and an additional usage fee for the parking space\, which may range from $10 to $16 per space\, depending on the location. See the application packet for approvals required from adjacent homes and/or businesses. \nFor more information on the application process\, please contact Paloma Amayo-Ryan at 512-974-1150 or paloma.amayo-ryan@austintexas.gov. This year\, we have engaged Heyden Walker at Black + Vernooy Architects to support community members interested in doing a PARK(ing) Day installation. If you’d like a partner\, design support\, or need volunteers\, you may email her at heyden@blackvernooy.com. \nTo ensure safety and accessibility\, parklet installations should follow these conditions: \n• Parking spaces must be delineated with a series of gripper cones (orange traffic cones); cones must be between 28 and 48 inches in height and cannot be attached to each other with string or ribbon.\n• Advertising\, vending or amplified sound activities are not permitted.\n• Sidewalk or crosswalk paths must not be obstructed. \nVisitors are welcome to stop by and interact with these installations. Follow #PARKingDayATX on social media for updates on the day. \nContinue to check back here for a list of participants and their parklet locations.

SUMMARY:SFC: Introduction to Food Gardening (2-Class Series)
DESCRIPTION:From the Sustainable Food Center –\nIf you are a new gardener or new to gardening in Central Texas\, and if you are looking for a holistic introduction to organic food growing\, then this Sustainable Food Center class is just for you. Taught by expert food gardeners\, this 2-part series combines hands-on activities and classroom discussion to provide participants with the knowledge and skills needed to start and maintain an organic and sustainable food garden. Whether you hope to garden in a yard\, on a balcony\, or at a community garden\, this class series will give you a strong foundation for growing your own food.\n\nClass 1: On day one participants will develop their observation skills by taking a guided tour through the Teaching Garden and the adjacent community garden. They will also learn what it means to garden organically\, sunlight and soil needs of vegetable gardens\, and you work together to weed\, amend and plant one of the beds in SFC’s Teaching Garden.\n\nClass 2: Day two is devoted to composting and to organic pest and disease management. We begin with a bug hunt then continue with a discussion of environmentally-friendly ways to control pests and diseases\, as-well-as different composting systems and a hands-on activity. Participants will also learn all about watering\, from the basics of watering seeds and transplants to water conservation.\n\nParticipants also take home a 45-page manual produced by SFC and designed specifically for Central Texas food growers.\n\n-Class participants must be 16 and older. Youth ages 12-15 may attend with purchase of an additional ticket and close parent/guardian supervision during class.\n-Registration closes 48 hours before class. To our delight\, 33 of our supporters showed up to shop and celebrate with us. In those first months\, we were open to the public six hours a week and averaged a few hundred shoppers per month. \nToday\, we welcome our community 40 hours a week to shop\, plus an additional 20 hours to volunteer. If you have been in the center on a Wednesday or Saturday (or any day it seems)\, you know we have steadily outgrown our current location. We will soon bring our community a new\, bigger\, better center complete with expanded shopping and a dedicated workshop/community space. We will offer more programs like Art of Reuse\, Craft Nights\, Kids Art Workshops and Educator Professional Development. Look for more details on our move very soon! \nWe want to send a sincere THANK YOU to our entire community. We cannot do this without you!

SUMMARY:Postcards For Progress Party
DESCRIPTION:From the Austin Sierra Club –\nLet’s write some postcards for our favorite candidates and party.\nThere is a campaign for this election to send out lots of handwritten postcards to those who may not vote or haven’t voted in recent elections. This is a great idea that could reach a lot of voters in Texas. It could be much more effective than phone banking (I can write 50 cards an hour and only reach a few folks per hour on the phone on a good day). \nThe important midterm election is around the corner and the results will be vital for environmental causes. SUMMARY:Solar Austin Happy Hour: Valuing Solar And Distributed Energy
DESCRIPTION:From Solar Austin –\n\nThe explosive growth of renewable energy throughout the US\, including here in Austin\, continues thanks to technological and policy innovations such as the value of solar tariff incentive used here in Austin. Nevertheless\, funding and implementing wide-scale storage of renewable energy remains a challenge\, particularly for distributed energy resources (DER)\, such as rooftop solar. \nWe are excited to announce that Karl Rábago\, Executive Director of the Pace Energy and Climate Center (PECC)\, will discuss these and related renewable energy innovations as our September Happy Hour speaker. He will be joining us via Skype\, but don’t worry – the rest of your Solar Austin friends will be there in person. Mr. Rábago will delve into the development of value of solar tariffs in different markets as well as its potential role in the adoption of DER storage. As the former Vice President of Distributed Energy Services at Austin Energy who led the way in creating the first value of solar tariff\, Mr. Rábago will be a particularly insightful speaker on this topic. \nMr. Rábago is the Executive Director of the PECC\, at the Pace Law School in White Plains\, New York. The PECC mission is to protect the earth’s environment through solutions that transform the ways that society supplies and consumes energy. Mr. Rábago has some 25 years experience in energy and climate policy markets. He serves as Chair of the Board of the Center for Resource Solutions\, a San Francisco-based non-governmental organization that works to advance voluntary clean energy markets. He also sits on the Board of the Interstate Renewable Energy Council (IREC). Mr. Rábago also is co-director and principal investigator for the Northeast Solar Energy Market Coalition\, a US DOE SunShot Initiative Solar Market Pathways project. \nWe hope you will join us for this discussion on cutting edge innovations in solar and energy storage policy with a true industry thought-leader.
