SUMMARY:Fix-It Clinic
DESCRIPTION:From Austin Resource Recovery –\nIs there a fallen hem in your favorite shirt? Did your blender suddenly stop working? Is your child’s toy a little worse for the wear? Bring these items and more to the Fix-It Clinic where volunteer coaches with repair know-how will be available to teach you how to fix your item. \nFix-It Clinics are all about do-it-together hands-on disassembly\, troubleshooting and repair knowledge. Fix-It Clinic attendees are expected to be active participants in trying to fix their items with guidance from our coaches. Attendees should plan to stay with their items. Dropping off of items for repair will not be permitted. \nAt this Fix-It Clinic\, you can learn how to fix almost anything! Including: \n\nClothing\nJewelry\nAccessories\nToys\nSmall Appliances\nElectronics\n\nAll ages are welcome\, but children under the age of 13 must be accompanied by a parent or guardian. \nChoose your ticket based on the item(s) you plan to bring and when you’ll arrive. If the ticket you are looking for is sold out\, though we can’t guarantee availability of our coaches\, you are welcome to come to the clinic with your item and we will do our best to accommodate you. You can RSVP here. \nIn order to ensure an effective\, fair\, and fun event\, attendees have a limit of two items for repair per visit. If time permits and if there are Fixit Coaches available to assist in the repair\, attendees can then work to repair additional items. The two item limit ensures that Fixit Clinics remain community events focused on sharing repair knowledge with the greatest number of people. \nInterested in hosting a Fix-It Clinic? We’ll also have copies of our How to Host a Fix-It Clinic guide available along with staff to answer questions about partnering with us to promote an event. \nWhat to bring: Your broken stuff and a desire to learn how to fix it! Sewing machines and other tools will be available for you to use\, but you can also bring your own machines and tools if you prefer. If you have a replacement part\, missing button\, a fabric patch\, matching thread\, etc. that you suspect might help you fix your item\, please bring it with you. \nInterested in being a volunteer coach? Contact us at Teresa.Chapman@austintexas.gov.

SUMMARY:Green for a Reason with Catherine O’Toole
DESCRIPTION:From the First Unitarian Universalist Church of Austin –\nAfter a very serious cancer diagnosis\, Catherine investigated who got cancer and why. It was during that research she came across the toxic chemicals that are in the everyday products used to build\, furnish and decorate our homes. Catherine’s mission is to educate the public on how home furnishings and building products contribute to serious health issues such as cancer\, infertility\, and asthma (to name a few). Along with bringing awareness of the toxic chemicals in products\, Catherine will present easy tips and alternative options to create a healthier home. \nCatherine hails from Ireland and before starting Green For A Reason\, she had a 10-year career in the fashion industry in New York City. She is a believer in\, “do what you love\, and everything else will fall into place.” In her 30s\, Catherine left corporate America and backpacked around the world by herself for three years. While traveling she met a Texas “Prince Charming.”

SUMMARY:Solar Austin Happy Hour: Austin Local Solar Update
DESCRIPTION:From Solar Austin –\nThis month we have a special solar-powered sponsor: Texas Beer Company! The first 33 ticketed happy hour attendees will get a free Texas Beer Company Pecos Amber beer. \nWhat is Austin Energy doing locally when it comes to solar? Our city-owned utility has existing goals to reach 110 MW of local solar by 2020 and 200 MW by 2025. Austin Energy has several programs to meet these goals. Recently\, Austin Energy made exciting announcements\, including the completion of the new 2.5 MW La Loma community solar project\, a new low-income solar program powered by La Loma\, and the pilot for solar available to multifamily dwellings and affordable housing\, called Shared Solar. Significant changes are also being made to the residential solar incentive program. \nWith the completion of La Loma\, Austin Energy has expanded its community solar program to 400 more residential customers. Although there is only room left on the waitlist at the regular rate\, the half set aside for the Customer Assistance Program (CAP) participants (low-income customers) is still open. CAP customers can now reduce their bill by signing up for the community solar program. (Sign up here:https://austinenergy.com/ae/green-power/solar-solutions/for-your-home/community-solar) Shared Solar will allow residents in a multifamily dwelling to receive a prorated portion of the value of solar credit from a single installation. \nSolar Austin is excited to announce Danielle Murray\, Austin Energy’s Solar Program Manager\, as our March Happy Hour speaker! She will provide an update on all things local solar at Austin Energy: on the La Loma Community Solar project\, the low-income solar program\, Shared Solar\, the upcoming changes to the residential solar incentive program\, and progress toward Austin’s local solar and other renewable energy goals. \nDanielle Murray is Austin Energy’s Manager of Solar Energy Services\, overseeing the utility’s renewable energy offerings and local solar programs. These include the wind-based GreenChoice program\, Community Solar program\, residential and commercial solar incentive programs\, solar inspections\, and the Value of Solar rates. Previously\, Danielle was the Renewable Program Manager for the City and County of San Francisco\, where she led efforts to develop the local solar market\, reduce soft costs\, and implement innovative financing mechanisms; coordinated wind\, wave\, and district energy research and development; and served as chair of the Mayor’s Renewable Energy Task Force. Prior to that\, she worked for the City of Toronto’s Energy Office\, where she designed and implemented the Toronto Neighborhoods Initiative which provided grants and low-interest loans to homeowners to install solar water heating systems and other energy efficiency improvements. \nWe hope you will join us Tuesday\, March 27th for this update on Austin Energy’s solar programs. There’s lots of change happening right now\, and this will be a great chance to ask your questions.

SUMMARY:Open Government\, Engaged Citizens: A Conversation on Texas' Public Information Act
DESCRIPTION:From Public Citizen Texas –\nThe Texas Public Policy Foundation\, the Freedom of Information Foundation of Texas\, the Texas Press Association\, the Texas Association of Broadcasters and Public Citizen presents… Open Government\, Engaged Citizens: A Conversation on Texas’ Public Information Act \nTexas once led the nation in government transparency\, but a series of recent developments have stymied the public’s ability to access information and provide opportunities for public comment about how your tax money is being spent and about who is acting on your behalf. This new dynamic has spurred many to call for change. Join the Texas Tribune’s Ross Ramsey and our panel of policy experts to discuss what changes\, if any\, can be made to strengthen the Public Information Act and how Texas can let more sunshine in. This is a free event\, so register early to get a ticket – Open Government\, Engaged Citizens: A Conversation on Texas’ Public Information Act \nIt is not often that Public Citizen’s name appears in concert with the Texas Public Policy Foundation\, but this is an important issue and we encourage our supporters to attend. Be sure to register ahead of time. \nThursday\, March 29\, 2018 from 11:30 AM to 1:00 PM (CDT) \nTexas Public Policy Foundation\n901 Congress Avenue\nAustin\, TX 78701 \nComplimentary lunch will be served.

SUMMARY:Austin Zero Waste Alliance Monthly Meeting
DESCRIPTION:From the Austin Zero Waste Alliance (AZWA) –\nAfter several months of hiatus\, the Austin Zero Waste Alliance (AZWA) is BACk\, and we are ready for a brand new campaign. We are meeting on Wednesday to strategize and kick this effort off. We hope you can make it! \nWHAT: AZWA Parks Recycling Meeting \nWHEN: Wednesday\, April 4\, 7 PM \nWHERE: Texas Campaign for the Environment office\, 105 W. Riverside Dr. \nThe campaign: pressing the City of Austin to provide recycling and other waste diversion in every single parks and recreation facility in the city. Thanks to the work of AZWA and our allies the City of Austin has a Universal Recycling Ordinance that requires all businesses to recycle\, but unfortunately the City has not lived up to its own rules. The vast majority of parks\, pools\, and other city rec facilities have NO recycling. \nWe know we can fix this\, but we need your help. Please join us next Wednesday to meet with us\, and Parks Board member Rick Cofer and members of the city’s Zero Waste Advisory Commission to develop a strategy for getting this necessary service implemented. \nThis is the first big step in an effort to secure recycling in all public places\, especially anywhere where there is a trash can. Zero Waste means common sense services\, and we need your help to teach the city just what that looks like! \nLooking forward to seeing you there–and feel free to invite others!
