SUMMARY:MLK March\, Rally\, and Festival
DESCRIPTION:The Annual Community March celebrates Dr. Martin Luther King’s legacy while uplifting diversity and multi-culturalism in our city. All businesses\, non-profit organizations and individuals are invited to march and celebrate Dr. King’s legacy. \nThe MLK Community March kicks off on Monday\, January 19\, 2026 at 9:30 a.m. on the south steps of the State Capitol for a rally. \nAt the conclusion of the program we will march to Huston-Tillotson University for the MLK Festival. \nOnce the MLK March arrives at Huston-Tillotson University\, the celebration will continue with the MLK Community Festival. \nThe family friendly festival will include all types of vendors and local musical artists to make this year’s celebration the best ever! Come prepared to have a great time. \nThe festival will be from 11am-3pm at Huston-Tillotson University at 900 Chicon St\, Austin\, TX 78702. \nThis year\, we are asking marchers to help by donating can goods or non-perishable food items\, which will be donated to the Central Texas Food Bank. Help to give to those in need by helping the Central Texas Food Bank fill their shelves with non-perishable food items. “True compassion is more than flinging a coin to a beggar; it is not haphazard and superficial. It comes to see that an edifice which produces beggars needs restructuring.” — Dr. Martin Luther King\, Jr. \nReceptacles will be available at both the Capitol and the festival at Huston-Tillotson University.

SUMMARY:Artist Reception: Reuse On the Runway\, RIP Austin Matchbook Memorial\, and Feasts in the Absurd
DESCRIPTION:Celebrate the opening of three new exhibitions at the Julia C. Butridge Gallery! Enjoy an evening of art\, conversation\, and community as we showcase Reuse On The Runway: The Exhibit by Austin Creative Reuse\, RIP Austin Matchbook Memorial by Ashley Rose Marino\, and Feasts in the Absurd by Lin Zagorski Latimer. \nAbout RIP Austin Matchbook Memorial – RIP to your Austin favorites. The RIP Austin Matchbook Memorial is our community’s collective matchbook collection\, featuring graphite illustrations of places from Austin’s past paired with stories from those who remember them fondly. Each hand-drawn matchbook transforms a shared memory into a keepsake\, representing the city’s homegrown nostalgia and the voices of Austinites old and new. \nAbout Feasts in the Absurd – Feasts in the Absurd is a playful and visually indulgent exploration of food’s aesthetics and its place in our cultural\, emotional\, and sensory experiences. The exhibition contrasts hyperrealistic depictions of modern processed foods with surreal and fantastical interpretations\, revealing the strange duality of what we eat today. Through bold color\, vivid detail\, and a fusion of realism\, surrealism\, and pop art\, Lin Zagorski Latimer invites viewers to reflect on food as both sustenance and spectacle. \nAbout Reuse On The Runway – Can fashion be both stunning and sustainable? Reuse On The Runway reveals the answer. Experience highlights from Austin Creative Reuse’s signature fashion show\, where artists renew and transform materials – fabric remnants\, architectural samples\, pop tabs\, ticket stubs\, newspapers\, and more – into extraordinary creations. Explore the ingenuity of upcycled fashion design\, challenging conventions and inspiring a future where creativity and conservation collide.

You can RSVP for the zoom link here. \nThe East Riverside Corridor Master Plan and Regulating Plan\, adopted in 2010 and 2013\, respectively\, regulate land use in the East Riverside area. In the last decade\, the area has experienced significant growth and investment\, and the corridor will be transformed by a light rail line currently being designed as part of Project Connect. In 2024\, Austin City Council passed Resolution 20240201-054\, directing staff to align the East Riverside Corridor Plan with the City’s Equitable Transit-Oriented Development (ETOD) initiative. Updating the plan is necessary to ensure that it works with the new transit line that is coming\, supports equitable outcomes\, and reflects the evolving needs of the community. \nThe purpose of the East Riverside Corridor Planning Initiative\, which includes an update to the Vision Plan and Regulating Plan\, is to guide the growth and redevelopment of the East Riverside Corridor and to ensure that future changes in the corridor benefit everyone who lives\, works\, and plays along the corridor. Our planning efforts focus on equitable\, transit-oriented\, and walkable development\, and support the inclusion of sustainable practices\, diversity\, maintaining a mix of housing options for various income levels\, improving active transportation and transit accessibility\, and encouraging a wide range of amenities for the community to enjoy. This plan update will ensure that the current and future needs of the community are accounted for\, and the City can facilitate public and private investments in the corridor area. \nThis planning initiative will identify important actions that the City\, property owners\, and the community can take to implement the vision for the East Riverside Corridor. The Vision Plan will offer recommendations concerning planning\, zoning\, and development. It will also include equitable strategies for small business and workforce development\, housing affordability\, mobility\, land use and urban design\, and real estate and financing strategies. The Regulating Plan will define development standards and guidelines for connectivity\, urban design\, safety\, and infrastructure improvements.

SUMMARY:Postponed: Onion Creek Metro Park Cleanup
DESCRIPTION:*POSTPONED* Community Creek Cleanup \nDue to predicted freezing temperatures on Saturday\, we’ve decided to postpone this Community Creek Cleanup.  \nKeep an eye out for the future cleanup date! \n———————————— \nJoin CRA for quarterly creek cleanups in Onion Creek Metropolitan Park! We need volunteers of all ages to help remove trash from in and around Onion Creek—an area with significant impact on the Texas Colorado River and our drinking water. \nReserve your spot now to help keep our local freshwater sources healthy and clean for generations to come! \nWhat to Bring: We will provide the tools needed to complete the cleanup\, such as grabbers and trash bags. Please bring a full water bottle\, sun protection\, and any snacks you may like to have on hand. \nWhat to wear: Weather-appropriate clothing and closed-toed shoes are recommended. Long pants\, long socks\, and long-sleeve shirts can protect against poison ivy\, bug bites\, and other common irritants. There are several burs in Onion Creek so we do not recommend wearing pants that have intentional holes\, fringe\, or are made from a soft material such as jogging pants and leggings.

SUMMARY:Sierra Club Meeting: Solidarity With Minneapolis
DESCRIPTION:Please join us for the Sierra Club Climate monthly meeting on Tuesday\, February 3\, as we focus on solidarity with people in Minneapolis who are facing fear\, disruption\, and injustice in their communities. \nSocial injustice is climate injustice. The intersectionality of immigration injustice and climate injustice compounds harm to affected folks. \nImmigration is a climate issue\, as more and more fathers and mothers are fleeing drought-ravaged homes in search of anywhere they might can feed their families.\nProtecting democracy is a climate issue\, because our work—already challenging—becomes vastly more difficult if it is replaced by tyranny.\nAttacks on vulnerable communities\, civil rights\, and democracy undermine the trust and collective action we need to solve the climate crisis. \nAt this meeting\, we will hear directly from people who live at ground zero in Minneapolis\, as well as others who have been on the ground protesting and supporting affected communities. We are honored that Rev. Carrie Holley-Hurt will join us\, along with several Minneapolis residents\, to share what they have witnessed and how we can stand in solidarity. \nEvent details \nTuesday\, February 3\nPotluck begins: 6:30 pm (come even if you can’t bring food)\nProgram begins: 7:00 pm \nLocation:\nFirst Unitarian Universalist Church of Austin\n4700 Grover Ave.\nAustin\, TX \nZoom option: https://us02web.zoom.us/j/5133069449 \nDuring the program\, we will: \n\nHear firsthand perspectives from Minneapolis\nOffer encouragement and solidarity to our guests\nOffer emotional support to one another\nDiscuss what we can do if similar events occur in Austin\nAsk everyone to call their U.S. Senators\nInvite donations to support people who are afraid to leave their homes and need tangible help\n\nThis will be a meaningful evening of connection\, learning\, and action. Please come if you can\, and feel free to invite others who care about justice\, democracy\, and climate.

This event is a cozy and casual night of original music and poetry and will feature a reading by Phoebe Murphy\, musical performances by guest rooms and Albeit the Maze\, plus a short Q&A with the evening’s creatives. \nAn Evening with Tones will showcase Austin-based AAPI creatives in a small\, intimate environment (similar to a listening room)\, putting the spotlight on their talent and ability to share worlds through their art. Through this experience\, we hope that attendees and featured creatives can exchange dialogue\, feedback\, appreciation\, and ideas in a candid\, sincere\, and supportive way. \nArtist Bios: \nPhoebe Murphy is a Chinese-American writer of literary and speculative fiction. Born in China and raised in Houston\, Texas\, she is an MFA candidate at Texas State University. Her work has been featured in Nocturne Magazine and Chthonic Matter\, and she is currently at work on a novel. \nAs guest rooms\, Persian-Texan Mason Parva explores the possibility of paradox. Classic songcraft coexists with ambient textures and field recordings to create a sound that is at once intimate and vast\, reverent and irreverent\, familiar and otherworldly. Lyrically\, Parva explores themes of love\, creation\, myth\, truth\, and ultimate reality. Each song is a quiet portal into the self\, inviting one to look directly at their parts that contradict yet harmonize. \nAlbeit the Maze\, also known as June Nguyen\, is a transfeminine Vietnamese American singer-songwriter based in Austin\, Texas. Pulling from musical inspirations such as Radiohead\, Fleet Foxes\, St. Vincent\, and The National\, June writes acoustic-forward songs that aim to impart a sense of longing. Her debut release\, Victim of a Threat EP\, explores topics such as masculinity\, loneliness\, repression\, and abandonment through the lens of a trans woman born and raised in Texas by Catholic immigrant parents. \nThis event is free\, all ages\, and open to the public. Light snax will be provided. Registration is encouraged. RSVP | An Evening with Tones
