SUMMARY:Tree Care at Graham Elementary
DESCRIPTION:Volunteer with TreeFolks for a Tree Care work day at Graham Elementary! \nTreeFolks planted 50 native trees at this site in North Austin in March 2023 as part of a project to increase urban canopy equity. Austin has experienced a 25% reduction in tree canopy cover over the past 30 years due to rapid urban growth\, which is disproportionately affecting vulnerable communities in the eastern crescent of the city. Tree mulching is needed to help retain moisture around roots\, prevent weed growth\, and protect the trees from extreme temperatures. \nTreeFolks will provide all necessary materials\, including gloves\, tools\, water\, and snacks. Please bring a water bottle\, dress for working outdoors\, and take breaks when necessary! RSVP here. \nIf you have any questions or concerns\, please get in touch with Gillian: volunteer@treefolks.org\, (512) 761-8738 cell

SUMMARY:Made You Look: Interrupting the Ordinary Through Art\, Style & Presence
DESCRIPTION:Made You Look is a combined artist talk and exhibit featuring artists Kiara Harris (Ki) and Johnny Munoz (OG Johnny) from the DASA (Downtown Austin Space Activation) Artist Residency Program. Through this exhibition\, both artists explore the stories of Austin. Hear about the artwork and the program from the artists themselves. \nAbout the DASA Artist in Residency Program: \nThe DASA Artist Residency Program offers a unique opportunity for artists across various disciplines to immerse themselves in a supportive and inspiring environment. The program provides the perfect space to focus on your creative practice\, develop new work and engage with a diverse community of artists and cultural enthusiasts. \nResidents receive a dedicated studio space in downtown Austin\, digital\, print and social media promotion through our partnership with Tribeza\, access to resources and facilities at DASA Residency spaces\, opportunities for collaboration and networking\, professional development and mentorship over one year and exposure to new ideas\, cultures and experiences. \nAbout OG Johnny: \nAs a native Austinite\, I draw inspiration from the vibrant energy of my city and the rugged beauty of the Southwest. Working with acrylic and spray paint\, I create custom murals and paintings that blend bold colors with dynamic compositions. I’m best known for my unique approach to painting cacti—capturing their resilience and character in a style that’s distinctly my own. Through my work\, I aim to transform spaces and spark a connection between art and the environment. \nAbout Ki: \nI am affectionately known as Ki. I am a stylist\, tailor and designer. I feel pride especially serving those who identify as gender diverse\, non-binary\, gender-fluid\, gender-nonconforming and/or LGBTQ+. My portfolio includes everything from custom designed wedding garb\, to sourcing and upcycling vintage threads and tailoring ready-to-wear clothing to fit the unique needs and bodies of queer folks. I have the privilege of prioritizing folks who have historically been underserved in this area. I pride myself on helping other queer and gender non-conforming folks feel comfortable\, confident and unapologetic in their clothing and subsequently their bodies. First I had to learn to do this for myself and that’s how SwankKi was born. I am inspired by pioneers like Dapper Dan. I envision a future where SwankKi Tailor & Threads follows in his footsteps as a southern fashion hub that employs and prioritizes queer folks\, folks of color and creatives alike.
