SUMMARY:Workshop: Vintage Saree Hair Accessories
DESCRIPTION:In this workshop we will make a few kinds of hair accessories out of vintage sarees. We will be making a rolled silk sari rosette headband and a brocade border bow. The timeless charm of traditional Indian textile featuring embroideries\, weaving and luxurious silk is enchanting. These saris have seen countess happy times and innumerable celebration. Too fragile to wear\, we will give them another life by repurposing them into hair accessories that can be worn on many occasions.\n\n \nAbout the Instructor:\nI am Preeti Agrawal\, a craft blogger and watercolorist. In my work\, I am concerned with experiments that combine old and new. I am drawn to the modern craft sensibility but at the same time the traditional arts call to me. I love the interplay of the two as I adjust traditional arts to new mediums and materials.\n\n \nA concern for the environment and a reverence for nature pervades my daily life and my work: I save fabric\, remnants\, beads and the castaways of modern living and incorporate them in my work. Making things by hand gives me joy\, up cycling\, salvaging and repurposing materials gives me joy\, as a result my crafting world is the perfect marriage of two!

We will be doing garden maintenance work from 8am-11:30ish during the hot months (July\, Aug & Sept.) 9am-noon all other months.\n  \nFestival Beach Food Forest is a grassroots pilot project neighboring the Festival Beach Community Garden and RBJ Residential Center in East Austin. We have transformed 2/3rds of an acre of City Park Land into an edible forest garden where visitors can openly forage and enjoy fresh food on the shores of Lady Bird Lake. Fruits\, nuts\, vegetables and herbs now flourish in this experimental pilot project to reclaim the public commons.

DESCRIPTION:October’s UWSA Unlearning Circle will explore the People’s Institute principle: Maintaining Accountability. \nOrganizing with integrity requires that we be accountable to the communities struggling with racist oppression. \nConversations about accountability among white people usually begin and end with a focus on individual accountability. They center holding each other accountable.\n \nTaking a page from our Black elders at the People’s Institute\, however\, our conversation will focus on accountability within the framework of organizing. Together we will identify our organizing communities. We will explore how accountability demands that our organizing communities build principled relationships with those who share our anti-racist values. Relationships that uplift the humanity of all of us. We will share history\, strategies\, and challenges in being accountable\, as a community\, to communities who struggle with racist oppression. DESCRIPTION:Huston-Tillotson University presents the 8th annual Building Green Justice Forum on Tuesday\, October 12th\, 12:30 pm – 5:00 pm via Whova.\n\n \nThis year’s theme is “Repair\, Regeneration\, and Reparations.”\n\n \nFull event details and registration:\nhttps://whova.com/web/hebgj_202110/\n\n \nRepair and regeneration have complementary but distinct biological definitions. Repair prevents an injury from spreading and re-establishes basic support; regeneration is a complete renewal of function that restores components by rebuilding them anew. We can envision how both definitions apply to environmental justice work\, from science and policy to advocacy and community resilience.\n\n \nThe concept of reparations further challenges us to assess the current state of the environment and examine reparations in environmental contexts. How can we renew systems and processes while accounting for the cascading damages of the past? Can a focus on immediate repair hinder long-term regeneration? Is renewal of any system possible without reparations? And how might we use these concepts to enact environmental justice work that is inclusive and transformative?\nWe are pleased to welcome Dr. Olúfẹ́mi O. Táíwò as our keynote speaker this year. Dr. Táíwò is an Assistant Professor of Philosophy at Georgetown University. He has authored more than 70 reports on Texas water resources\, with subjects including floods and droughts\, hydrology of rural and urban watersheds\, water quality of surface and groundwater\, and the hydrology of the Edwards Aquifer. Slade has served as guest lecturer and on thesis and dissertation committees for several Texas universities and as a water-resources expert on technical and advisory committees for many federal and state agencies\, city departments\, river authorities\, and water districts.
