SUMMARY:Sierra Club July Meeting: Keep The Power On!
DESCRIPTION:Join us July 15th for our July general meeting at the Mosaic Workshop to socialize with like-minded Austin neighbors and hear a talk about energy issues in Texas from Shane Johnson of the Sierra Club Lone Star Chapter. \nDoors open at 6:30 for light snacks and conversation. Club updates and program starts at 7pm. We hope you’ll join us.\nMany Sierrans and environmental allies are motivated to help stop or slow climate change. For the past several years\, in order to help broaden the base of everyday Texans who are engaged in that critical climate justice work\, the Sierra Club Lone Star Chapter has prioritized campaigns that address energy burden\, energy poverty\, and economic justice; all issues exacerbated by the rapidly warming climate. \nTexans are struggling with skyrocketing energy bills\, on top of rising cost of living\, thanks largely to the data center boom and how Gov. Abbott and many state leaders allow energy companies to keep raising our bills to make more profit off of our backs. We are all tired of Texans having to choose between groceries\, medicine\, clothing for their kids\, and a safe thermostat setting. But we need your help to make a difference. \nTo help regular Texans\, we need enough everyday people coming together to have the influence to combat these powerful companies and the ultra-wealthy who own many (but not all ) Texas lawmakers. Join us on Wed\, July 15th to learn what major decisions on energy issues are coming up at state agencies and the legislature\, like whether the people or corporations pay for majorly expensive new transmission infrastructure\, and what you can do about it. \nFor the General Meeting please RSVP HERE for in-person attendance! \nWhere: The Mosaic Workshop\, 729 Airport Blvd\, Austin\, TX 78702. Parking map here. Park in the Mosaic Workshop spots or those at the City Union building. (Please avoid spots designated for Broad Studios Club House). \nWhen: Wednesday July 15. Arrive at 6:30pm for light snacks and conversation. Program starts at 7pm.

SUMMARY:Summer Education Series: Ready\, Set\, Restore!
DESCRIPTION:Join us on Thursday\, July 16\, from 6 PM to 7:30 PM for a free virtual class with two presenters from Austin’s Watershed Protection Department. Meghan Slocombe will discuss the impacts of urbanization on water cycle processes and stream ecology\, and provide an overview of WPD monitoring. Liz Cardinal will teach us about land management practices in Grow Zones and the positive impacts of community stewardship in Austin on riparian health.   We will examine how concepts of urban stream ecology apply to the work that volunteers do in the Ready\, Set\, Plant! program and discuss how WPD protects our community’s lives\, property\, and environment by reducing the impacts of flooding\, erosion\, and water pollution. \nMeghan Slocombe is an Environmental Scientist in the Applied Watershed Science section of the City of Austin Watershed Protection Department. Her work focuses on monitoring water quality and assessing stream health across Austin. Meghan holds a Master of Science in Ecology from Utah State University and a Bachelor of Science in Environmental Science from the University of Massachusetts Amherst. Meghan is passionate about community engagement\, climate resilience\, and science with real-world applications. She loves spending time in Austin’s beautiful streams\, whether she is out measuring water quality during the workday or enjoying a relaxing evening in her kayak! \nLiz Cardinal is a dedicated environmental stewardship professional with over eight years of experience working alongside nonprofit\, community\, and government organizations to drive positive change in parks and greenspaces. She currently manages the Grow Zone Program at Austin Watershed Protection. The program designates\, restores\, and protects over 260 acres of riparian zones in Austin watersheds. She works closely with nonprofit partners and citizen volunteers to help clean up creeks and waterways and carry out restoration projects like litter abatement\, invasive species removal and native planting.  She holds a B.S. in Environmental Communication from The Ohio State University\, and a M.S. in Science Education from Portland State University. \nThis training is free and open to anyone\, but you must register to attend. If you have any questions or concerns\, please contact Gillian: volunteer@treefolks.org\, (512) 761-8738 cell

SUMMARY:Forest Restoration on the Vireo Preserve
DESCRIPTION:Join us to restore forest habitat on the Vireo Preserve\, part of the Balcones Canyonlands Preserve (BCP)\, which is home to rare and endangered plants and animals. Tasks vary and\, depending on the workday and season\, may include watering\, planting\, seeding\, removing invasives\, mulching\, and building soil. \nThis workday will involve walking over uneven surfaces\, using digging tools\, and carrying watering cans or other materials. All participants under 18 must be accompanied by a legal guardian. \nYou can register to volunteer here. \nLocated on Loop 360 near FM 2244: bit.ly/vireoBCP. As a Certified Speaking Professional\, the highest earned designation from the National Speakers Association\, he is recognized for sustained excellence\, professionalism\, and impact on the speaking stage. A graduate of Stanford University and Georgetown University Law Center\, Adrian began his career in public service. From 1999 to 2001\, he served as a special assistant to President Bill Clinton with the Initiative for One America – the first free-standing office in the White House to address issues of racial\, religious and ethnic reconciliation. He later worked as a senior policy analyst for Colorado Governor Bill Ritter Jr. \nAdrian has authored four acclaimed books examining soul food\, barbecue history\, and the stories of chefs who shaped presidential cuisine. His work has earned two James Beard Awards and numerous national honors. His most recent book\, Cooking to the President’s Taste\, published by the White House Historical Association in 2025\, expands his scholarship into Asian heritage chefs in White House history. \nDaniel Vaughn is the author of The Prophets of Smoked Meat: A Journey Through Texas Barbecue\, the coauthor of Whole Hog BBQ: The Gospel of Carolina Barbecue\, and the barbecue editor at Texas Monthly. He has traveled the world sampling smoked meats at over 1\,800 barbecue joints\, most of which are in Texas.\nBook sales and signing \nThe Store at LBJ will be selling copies of several of Adrian Miller’s books\, including Black Smoke: African Americans and the United States of Barbecue; Soul Food: The Surprising Story of an American Cuisine\, One Plate at a Time; and The President’s Kitchen Cabinet: The Story of the African Americans Who Have Fed Our First Families\, from the Washingtons to the Obamas. Miller will sign copies purchased onsite following the program. \nBy purchasing through the Store at LBJ\, you support a local cultural institution. Across four rotating exhibitions on display May 30 through January 10\, visitors will encounter defining moments—from the Brown v. Together\, we hope to explore how the American story has unfolded over 250 years—and where it may go next.\nLocation and parking \nThe conversation will be hosted in the 10th floor Atrium of the LBJ Presidential Library.
