SUMMARY:Loop 360 Tree Decoration Cleanup
DESCRIPTION:From Keep Austin Beautiful –\nOne of the most popular holiday traditions in Austin is decorating the juniper (mountain cedar) trees that line the shoulders of Loop 360. This festive activity brings much cheer to the roadside\, but many decorations stay up long after the holidays are over. To restore the trees to their natural beauty\, Keep Austin Beautiful is organizing its sixth annual Highway 360 Cleanup on Saturday\, January 6\, 2018\, from 9 to 11 am. \nWhile we love the holiday spirit\, removing leftover decorations is a priority for Keep Austin Beautiful due to environmental concerns. Festive accessories pose a threat to local watersheds when they come loose and wash into nearby creeks\, and wildlife may mistake ornaments for food. Decorations can also damage trees if they are not taken off after the holidays. If your family decorates a juniper tree this year\, Keep Austin Beautiful is asking you to do your part to keep the city clean by removing adornments in a timely manner. \n“It’s not about what is on the tree—it is what has fallen off or what remains\,” stated Rodney Ahart\, Executive Director of Keep Austin Beautiful. “We as Austinites have an obligation to restore the environment to its natural state\, avoiding any harmful effects to wildlife or the nearby Bull Creek.” \nVolunteers will meet at 9 am at 7700 North Capital of Texas Highway across from the Canyon Springs Apartments at Bull Creek to pick up supplies. Volunteers will drive to sites along Highway 360 to clean up decorations\, and are asked to exercise caution along the roadway. Following the cleanup\, volunteers will drop off supplies and collected decorations at the assembly point and enjoy treats at an appreciation party. \nYou can RSVP here.

SUMMARY:Nutrient Cycles In Aquaponics And Soil
DESCRIPTION:From Brite Ideas –\nFree Class from Brite Ideas: Nutrient Cycles in Aquaponics and Soil \nThe role of nutrition is obvious in people\, but in plants\, the stunting of growth is not so easy to identify. It is hard to know how more your garden might yield with proper nutrition. Yield should not be measured in pounds\, but rather by the nutritional value of food. Start nourishing your soil now while it is cold and your garden will be up to speed in no time. \n  \n  \n

SUMMARY:Sierra Club Monthly Program: Creating An Electric Grid That Runs On Clean Energy
DESCRIPTION:From the Sierra Club –\nHappy Hour /food and beverages (http://www.scholzgarten.com/): 6pm-7 pm \nSocializing and informal discussions on current events: 6pm-7 pm \nAnnouncements and program begin at 7 pm \nPROGRAM: Creating an Electric Grid That Runs Completely on Clean Energy … in the Real World\, with Paul Robbins \nA world beset by global warming needs a dramatic conversion of its energy consumption and production infrastructure. Misunderstanding about how to accomplish this conversion is pervasive. Carbon-free solutions\, as well as challenges to clean energy techniques and technologies\, need to be well understood by the environmentalists advocating their use. This presentation will summarize the fundamental requirements necessary to create the electric grid for this century. \nPaul Robbins is a long-time environmental activist and consumer advocate. He began his career in 1977 as a volunteer opposing the South Texas Nuclear Project. Since then\, he has been researching and advocating for alternative technologies and policies to promote clean energy\, energy and water conservation\, and resource management. He helped start Austin’s clean energy programs in the 1980s\, and was instrumental in persuading the City of Austin to purchase the majority of its electricity from wind power. In 2007\, the Austin City Council named a downtown district chilling plant after Paul for his work over the decades. He has won several awards including: Austin Sierra Club – Outstanding Achievement 2003\, Keep Austin Beautiful award for Individual Achievement 2005\, Best of Austin awards from the Austin Chronicle in 2010\, 2011\, and 2013. \nConsider biking\, carpooling\, or taking Cap Metro (http://www.capmetro.org/planner) to the meeting. Free parking is available after 6pm on San Jacinto and nearby streets.

SUMMARY:Sierra Club Book Club - A Passion For Nature
DESCRIPTION:From the Sierra Club –\n\n\n\nWe will be discussing the biography of John Muir\, who started the Sierra Club and was a fascinating figure in environmental history. The book I read was “A Passion for Nature: The Life of John Muir” by Donald Worster. You are welcome to read any biography on John Muir if you’d like. \nHere’s an excerpt from Amazon.com about this book: \n“In Donald Worster’s magisterial biography\, John Muir’s “special self” is fully explored as is his extraordinary ability\, then and now\, to get others to see the sacred beauty of the natural world. A Passion for Nature is the most complete account of the great conservationist and founder of the Sierra Club ever written. It is the first to be based on Muir’s full private correspondence and to meet modern scholarly standards. Yet it is also full of rich detail and personal anecdote\, uncovering the complex inner life behind the legend of the solitary mountain man.” \nOur next book for February is going to be “Cadillac Desert: The American West and its Disappearing Water” by Marc Reisner\, which is very well reviewed. \nAfter that\, March\, April\, May’s books are TBD. We need some suggestions\, so feel free to mention it in the comments and vote on books\, by clicking “like” next to people’s comments. I’m thinking about a book on gardening\, and/or food would be great.
