SUMMARY:Iowa Flood Center: Tools & Resources for Enhancing Flood Resilience
DESCRIPTION:Following the devastating floods in 2008 deemed as “Iowa’s Katrina\,” state legislators created the Iowa Flood Center (IFC) in 2009 based at the University of Iowa. IFC is the nation’s only academic research center devoted solely to flooding that puts science-based information in the hands of Iowa’s decision-makers\, lawmakers\, state and federal agencies\, emergency responders\, and the public.\n\n \nThe IFC has transformed flood resilience in Iowa focused on advancing flood monitoring and prediction\, flood inundation mapping\, flood mitigation\, and education and outreach. The center communicates reliable\, real-time flood information through its popular publicly accessible Iowa Flood Information System online web application.\n\n \nThe IFC has helped bring more than $100M in funding from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development to the state of Iowa to advance watershed-based flood management efforts. The presentation will introduce some of IFC’s major initiatives and activities that have the potential to be replicated to support flood resilience efforts across the country.\n\n\n\n\n \nYou can RSVP here.

SUMMARY:Music On The Trail: Deer Fellow
DESCRIPTION:Shake up your Wednesday nights with Music on the Trail—a free live music series right on the Ann and Roy Butler Hike and Bike Trail. Every week\, the Rainey Street Trailhead lawn transforms into Austin’s coolest outdoor concert spot\, featuring incredible local musicians. Whether you’re here to discover new sounds\, jam out to an Austin favorite\, or just add a live soundtrack to your evening stroll\, we promise good tunes and great vibes. So grab a blanket\, bring some friends\, and let’s make Wednesdays the best night of the week! \nGet To Know The Artist – Deer Fellow  \nDeer Fellow is an indie pop/folk duo with “comforting yet bold musicality.” Based out of Austin\, bandmates Matt Salois (vocals\, guitar) and Alyssa Kelly (vocals\, violin\, keys) have built a cross-genre sound that “stirs hearts with each carefully crafted note.” \n“It’s hard to tell where the duo behind Deer Fellow ends and the other begins. Matt and Alyssa’s voices\, like instruments\, interchange\, blend\, rise and fall in ways that few duos can achieve. If listeners are lucky enough to catch a live show\, they’d be forgiven for mistaking the pair for a full band upon first note. Matt’s guitar looping techniques\, skillful chord progressions\, and percussive elements\, along with Alyssa’s synth backgrounds and bell-clear violin\, produce a fulsome sound that is far from the typical duo most listeners have come to expect.” – EASTside Magazine \nThe two’s intricate vocal harmonies and unique guitar-violin blends have earned them Official SXSW status\, a Sonic Guild grant\, and features in Earmilk\, Austin-American Statesman\, and KUTX.

SUMMARY:April 2025 Fix-It Clinic
DESCRIPTION:Got a broken item like a torn shirt\, faulty blender or worn-out toy? Bring them to a Fix-It Clinic and learn hands-on repair skills with help from our expert volunteers—free of charge! \nNew policy: Starting with this event\, we will no longer work on laptops\, cell phones\, or tablets at the Fix-It Clinic. These projects often require extensive troubleshooting and take up a lot of our volunteers’ time. Instead\, we encourage you to subscribe to the Fix-It Austin newsletter to receive announcements of upcoming workshops focused on electronics repair\, consult the Austin Reuse Directory to find a professional repair shop\, and/or look for a repair guide on the IFixIt website. \nHow it works: Bring up to two items (excluding laptops\, cellphones\, and tablets) and work with our coaches to learn how to fix them. Tools will be provided\, but feel free to bring your own. If you know your item needs a replacement part\, please bring it with you. While we can’t guarantee every item will be repaired\, you’ll learn how it works and what you may need to fix it. Note that our electronics/miscellaneous category is the most popular and sometimes there is a wait to work with a volunteer. \nYou can RSVP for a time slot here. \nDrop-off option: Can’t attend in person? Drop off your item at the St. John’s Library Branch (which is located in the same building as the Virginia L. Brown Recreation Center at 7500 Blessing Ave)\, March 28 – April 3. We’ll try to fix it\, and you can pick it up April 7-12. Items not claimed by April 12 will be donated. Space is limited\, and a waiver is required.

SUMMARY:Music On The Trail: Katrina Cain
\n\n\nGet To Know The Artist – Katrina Cain \n\n\n\n\nBased in Austin\, Texas\, Katrina is a full-time performer\, songwriter\, and studio vocalist working in Austin\, Nashville\, and LA. Katrina Cain’s music has been described as everything from Americana\, to country\, to pop. She is most well known for her standout performances on Season 15 of NBC’s The Voice\, beginning with her haunting arrangement of Fleetwood Mac’s “Rhiannon”. Her audition prompted Adam Levine to declare that she “should have been a four-chair turn” had half the teams not already filled. \nKatrina’s music brings the listener on a journey that breaks the barriers of genre: sweet\, soulful vocals and luscious dreamscapes\, swinging between soul breaking singer-songwriter ballads\, and pop country anthems. In her quietest moments\, Katrina’s pop sensibilities make room for her authentic tales of Americana. Never one to skimp on lyric\, Katrina’s artful storytelling bears more of the human experience than just a heartbreak like the one before.

SUMMARY:City of Austin Career Expo
DESCRIPTION:The City of Austin is hosting its 14th Annual Career Expo on April 2\, 2025. This event is intended to help build a stronger community by providing opportunities for local employers to connect with talent to fill critical vacancies and help job seekers find that perfect job/career opportunity. \nJob Seekers will have opportunities to meet face-to-face with company representatives. This year\, the City launched a new contingent hiring pilot program in January which allows departments to conduct interviews and extend contingent job offers on-site during recruiting events. There are close to 90 different job titles included in the program in areas such as accounting\, customer service\, finance\, human resources\, healthcare\, engineering\, and various operations type jobs.  \nSeveral City departments will be participating in Career Expo and there will be opportunities for job seekers in attendance to be interviewed on the spot during the event and potentially be offered a job. Any offers would be contingent upon passing any required background checks and assessments. \nShowcase presentations by local employers will also be happening throughout the day during the event and will feature tips for job seekers. We encourage job seekers to bring copies of their resume to share with prospective employers and decide in advance which employer booths they would like to visit. \nMore than 100 employers are expected to be in attendance\, including private employers\, state agencies\, higher education\, technical schools\, temporary agencies\, many smaller businesses with skilled labor and customer service job openings\, and City of Austin departments. \nJob seekers can RSVP here.
