SUMMARY:Community Conversations: Project Connect Anti-Displacement
DESCRIPTION:The City of Austin needs your support to help prevent displacement. Community feedback will help guide funding priorities for the next three years.\n\n \nIn 2020\, Austin voters approved Project Connect. Our local public transit system will expand to connect more parts of our city than ever before. Investments of this size can bring great benefits. They can also potentially impact displacement as property values in nearby neighborhoods rise. To address this\, voters also approved $300 million dedicated to anti-displacement.\n\n \nAs our city continues to grow and develop\, we must do a better job to keep communities in place\, while providing much-needed infrastructural improvements and transit services. To do this we must center the ideas of our residents to address displacement.\n\n \n$75 million will be invested over the next three years. The Project Connect Community Advisory Committee (CAC) has identified 5 goals for these three years of anti-displacement funding. The goals build on the work of the Project Connect Racial Equity Catalysts and the Nothing About Us Without Us report.\n\n \nJoin the Community Advisory Committee for a conversation to share your ideas about how $75 million should be invested toward anti-displacement efforts. You can RSVP here.

SUMMARY:Building Green Justice through the Arts
DESCRIPTION:Presented in partnership with Raasin in the Sun and the Mural Arts Institute – Philadelphia\n \nHuston-Tillotson University’s Building Green Justice Forum invites you to a Community Conversation where we will consider the role of the arts in helping us to envision the environmentally just futures we want to bring about.\n \nEnvironmental justice work is more critical than ever. Activists\, scholars\, students\, community members\, and policy makers continue to battle the many challenges of environmental racism even as climate change accelerates and inequality gaps widen. When so much of our focus is directed to addressing injustices\, it can be difficult to connect to a motivating vision of justice. Join us as we look to the arts for sources of inspiration\, healing\, reconciliation\, and motivation in imagining an environmentally just world. We will also discuss an EJ mural to be installed on the Huston-Tillotson campus.\n \nWe will have a short presentation followed by breakouts incorporating discussion and creative expression. Pizza\, drinks and snacks will be served. Free and open to the public! You can RSVP here.\n \nLocation: Dickey-Lawless auditorium on the Huston-Tillotson campus.\n \nDriving/parking directions: Please park in the guest parking lot on Chalmers avenue between 7th and 11 streets and enter campus via the pedestrian gate (this is the West entrance on the map below). The D-L building is on the southwest corner of campus.

SUMMARY:Birding With The Travis Audubon
DESCRIPTION:Join Shoal Creek Conservancy and Travis Audubon Society as we enjoy a Fall birding walk at Beverly Sheffield Northwest District Park. We will explore the main portion of the park around the pond and playground\, then move south toward Park Street and the open section of Shoal Creek at the end of Park. We will hope to enjoy good views of year-round residents including Red-Shouldered Hawks\, various woodpeckers\, and the usual Hill country songbirds such as titmice\, chickadees\, and Northern Cardinals. Additionally\, we will be on the lookout for fall migrants and early-arriving winter residents such as Orange-crowned Warblers\, Nashville Warblers\, Common Yellowthroats\, and the sassy Ruby-crowned Kinglet.\n \nBeginners as well as experienced birders are welcome. Not all portions of the planned route are easily accessible to those with mobility challenges\, but the main portion of the park and playground area are. We can make adjustments in our route if necessary. Restrooms are available at the playground\, but soap may not be stocked so consider bringing hand sanitizer. Although the trip will be relatively short both in duration and walking distance please bring water or snacks\, if you desire\, and wear appropriate footwear. We will have a small supply of loaner binoculars if you do not have your own.\n \nKeep track of the weather because you all know how quickly weather can change in central Texas! This event will proceed in the event of very light rain or drizzle\, but will be canceled for heavy rain or lightning. Please check your email before leaving home on the morning of the walk if there is any questionable weather. \nWe will meet in the parking area closest to the pond at 7:30 am and will aim to end by 10am. \nInterested? RSVP here.

SUMMARY:Community Conversations: Project Connect Anti-Displacement
DESCRIPTION:The City of Austin needs your support to help prevent displacement. Community feedback will help guide funding priorities for the next three years.\n \nIn 2020\, Austin voters approved Project Connect. Our local public transit system will expand to connect more parts of our city than ever before. Investments of this size can bring great benefits. They can also potentially impact displacement as property values in nearby neighborhoods rise. To address this\, voters also approved $300 million dedicated to anti-displacement.\n \nAs our city continues to grow and develop\, we must do a better job to keep communities in place\, while providing much-needed infrastructural improvements and transit services. To do this we must center the ideas of our residents to address displacement.\n \n$75 million will be invested over the next three years. The Project Connect Community Advisory Committee (CAC) has identified 5 goals for these three years of anti-displacement funding. The goals build on the work of the Project Connect Racial Equity Catalysts and the Nothing About Us Without Us report.\n \nJoin the Community Advisory Committee for a conversation to share your ideas about how $75 million should be invested toward anti-displacement efforts.

SUMMARY:Austin Rally for the People's Utility Platform
DESCRIPTION:Ahead of the vote on Austin Energy’s proposed residential rate hike that could raise the rates on Austins already-struggling working class by hundreds of dollars per year\, organized labor\, climate\, and environmental justice groups are standing together to demand a platform for economic and environmental justice from Austin Energy. The co-sponsoring groups believe that our municipally-owned utility should use their public dollars to act in the public good. It is unacceptable that Austin Energy wants to raise rates for working families\, creates low-wage construction jobs with no safety training\, and furthers the rich-poor divide on clean energy access.Join us to demand that Austin Energy adopt the Peoples Utility Platform for economic and environmental justice.\n \nThe co-sponsoring groups believe that our municipally-owned utility should use their public dollars to act in the public good. It is unacceptable that Austin Energy wants to raise rates for working families\, creates low-wage construction jobs with no safety training\, and furthers the rich-poor divide on clean energy access.\n \nJoin us to demand that Austin Energy adopt the People’s Utility Platform for economic and environmental justice. This coalition calls on Austin Energy to: \nSTOP THE RATE HIKES. With rapidly rising costs\, working families are already struggling. It is unacceptable to raise residents’ electric bills by hundreds of dollars per year\, targeting the lowest income users and lowest energy users.\n \nEND EXPLOITATIVE CONDITIONS in Austin Energy power purchase agreements by committing to wage\, safety and training standards that keep construction workers safe. A publicly-owned utility should be creating safe\, family-sustaining jobs\, especially in a state like Texas where a construction worker loses their life\, on average\, once every 3 days due to unsafe working conditions.\n \nEXPAND THE USE OF CLEAN ENERGY and increase access to community solar and energy efficiency for renters and low-income households. Large-scale and local clean energy keeps our bills low and makes the grid more resilient.\n\n  \nWho: Texas Climate Jobs Action; Central Texas Building Trades; Texas AFL-CIO; AustinCentral Labor Council; IBEW Local 520; People Organized in Defense of Earth and herResources (PODER); Sierra Club- Lone Star Chapter; Sunrise Movement ATX; and local political/community leaders.
