DESCRIPTION:Volunteer with TreeFolks for a Tree Care work day at Graham Elementary! \nTreeFolks planted 50 native trees at this site in North Austin in March 2023 as part of a project to increase urban canopy equity. Austin has experienced a 25% reduction in tree canopy cover over the past 30 years due to rapid urban growth\, which is disproportionately affecting vulnerable communities in the eastern crescent of the city. Tree mulching is needed to help retain moisture around roots\, prevent weed growth\, and protect the trees from extreme temperatures. \nTreeFolks will provide all necessary materials\, including gloves\, tools\, water\, and snacks. These innovative planting devices capture rain and condensation\, then slowly release it to young trees—helping them survive the Central Texas heat while using very little water. \nBy giving them a good clean\, you’ll be making sure they’re ready to keep supporting the Central Texas Floodplain Reforestation Program and the next generation of trees. \nExpect a fun few hours of suds\, splashes\, and good vibes—we’ll have snacks to keep you fueled and tunes to keep the energy high. Think of it as one last chance to soak up Austin’s “bonus summer” before the cooler weather rolls in. \nBe sure to wear clothes and shoes you don’t mind getting wet and/or a little dirty. \nYou can sign up for the morning session (9am to noon) or the afternoon session (1pm to 4pm).

DESCRIPTION:This event is perfect for nature enthusiasts (ages 12+) who want to learn more about these beautiful creatures and their incredible journey. Kids 11 and under can still lend a helping hand with their parent or guardian present. \nWe’ll start the day with a brief presentation on monarch butterfly migration and tagging techniques. Then\, we’ll head out to our designated tagging area in the Hill Country Garden\, where you’ll have the opportunity to carefully catch and tag your very own monarch butterfly. Our Horticulture Supervisor Adriane Horne will be on hand to assist and answer any questions you may have. \nNot only will you have the chance to interact with these amazing creatures up close\, but you’ll also be contributing to important scientific research. The information gathered from tagged butterflies helps us better understand their migration patterns and overall population health. \nRSVP here.

Our events are family-friendly and provide an opportunity for community members to connect with Austin’s public lands. \nNo experience or tools are needed. We will train everyone at the beginning of the event\, and provide all tools\, materials\, gloves\, water\, and snacks. \nRSVP to volunteer here.
