SUMMARY:Lives Remembered: Black History in Pease Park
DESCRIPTION:The site of today’s Pease District Park was part of the 365-acre Woodlawn homestead owned by former Texas Governor E. M. Pease and his wife\, Lucadia. Although Governor Pease supported the Union during the Civil War\, research has found that at least 37 individuals were directly enslaved or leased as enslaved labor by the Pease family. This tour recognizes and shares some of the stories of a few of these people. \nYou can register to attend here. \nWHAT TO EXPECT:\nThis tour will include about 1.5 miles of walking and learning about this history from our tour guides\, Donovan and Julia. If you have concerns about this walk\, please contact us at info@peasepark.org for assistance.

SUMMARY:Don Baylor Neighborhood Park Renaming And Historical Marker Unveiling
DESCRIPTION:Please join us for a Renaming Ceremony and Historical Marker Unveiling for Don Baylor Neighborhood Park! \nLast year\, my team and I led the city council in adopting an ordinance renaming Westenfield Neighborhood Park after the late Don Baylor\, a Clarksville native who overcame segregation to become a baseball legend. Join us for a ceremonial unveiling of the park’s new historical marker! A reception at Sweet Home Missionary Baptist Church will follow. \n\nDon Baylor (1949–2017) grew up in Clarksville\, a historic Texas Freedom Community near this park. Despite segregation preventing him from playing in the park as a child\, Baylor broke barriers throughout his life. He was among the first Black students to integrate O. Henry Middle School and later attended Austin High School. Drafted by the Baltimore Orioles in 1967\, Baylor became one of the first African American players signed directly out of high school in Texas. His Major League Baseball career spanned 19 seasons\, earning him the American League’s Most Valuable Player award in 1979 and a World Series championship in 1987. Baylor later managed the Colorado Rockies and Chicago Cubs\, earning Manager of the Year honors in 1995. \nBeyond the field\, Baylor was a tireless advocate for the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation and a lifelong member of Sweet Home Missionary Baptist Church. His induction into multiple sports halls of fame and burial at the Texas State Cemetery reflect his enduring impact on Texas and the nation. \nFunding for the interpretive marker came from District 10\, Austin Parks Foundation\, and the Baylor family.

SUMMARY:Ready\, Set\, Plant at St. Edward's University East Woods
DESCRIPTION:RSVP to volunteer here! \nReady\, Set\, Plant! is a volunteer tree-planting program that plants 10\,000 trees each year along Austin’s creeks and rivers. In partnership with the City of Austin and Keep Austin Beautiful\, we educate volunteers on proper tree-planting techniques and riparian restoration. Some benefits of creekside planting include cooler water for aquatic life\, erosion control\, and filtering pollutants from stormwater. Our events are family-friendly and provide an opportunity for community members to connect with Austin’s public lands. \nNo experience or tools are needed. We will train everyone at the beginning of the event\, and provide all tools\, materials\, gloves\, water\, and snacks.

SUMMARY:Postponed: Onion Creek Metro Park Cleanup
DESCRIPTION:*POSTPONED* Community Creek Cleanup \nDue to predicted freezing temperatures on Saturday\, we’ve decided to postpone this Community Creek Cleanup.  \nKeep an eye out for the future cleanup date! \n———————————— \nJoin CRA for quarterly creek cleanups in Onion Creek Metropolitan Park! We need volunteers of all ages to help remove trash from in and around Onion Creek—an area with significant impact on the Texas Colorado River and our drinking water. \nReserve your spot now to help keep our local freshwater sources healthy and clean for generations to come! \nWhat to Bring: We will provide the tools needed to complete the cleanup\, such as grabbers and trash bags. Please bring a full water bottle\, sun protection\, and any snacks you may like to have on hand. \nWhat to wear: Weather-appropriate clothing and closed-toed shoes are recommended. Long pants\, long socks\, and long-sleeve shirts can protect against poison ivy\, bug bites\, and other common irritants. There are several burs in Onion Creek so we do not recommend wearing pants that have intentional holes\, fringe\, or are made from a soft material such as jogging pants and leggings.
