SUMMARY:Better World Book Club
DESCRIPTION:Feeling disconnected or overwhelmed and wondering what to do about it? This monthly book club is for people to engage with works on morality\, philosophy\, economics\, sustainability\, and degrowth among others. The goal is to better understand the world and our role in changing it. \nEach month\, I’ll also spotlight a local nonprofit and volunteer opportunity to help connect our conversations with real-world actions. The idea is that not everyone will be passionate about every topic but everyone will hopefully be passionate about some topic. \nWe will be meeting on the 4th Thursday @anisdayandnight at 7pm! The wonderful @pricklypearbookbus which is on-site will have books stocked to buy in person or online! \nI truly believe that in the fight for a better world\, every thoughtful conversation and every small act matters and this my step towards change\, I hope you join me! \nOur first book on Sept 25th will be The Message by Ta-Nehisi Coates. Words are powerful and this book explores the power of stories and how they shape reality through three intertwining essays. \nYou can be a part of the discussions if you’ve read the whole book\, a couple of pages or none at all but are simply interested in the topic. @pricklypearbookbus will have copies available online and in person! They are kind enough to give a discount if you buy through them! ‍↕️ \nI will also have journalists and poets come to share their real life experiences of the importance of writing and telling stories that matter! Amy Stansbury from The Austin Common will be one of our guest speakers.

Their carbon-negative\, solar-powered process eliminates expensive water transport\, reduces waterborne diseases\, and creates local jobs. \nCRAFT is a public studio that promotes sustainability through a shared use model for arts and crafts. Their model reduces waste\, prevents unnecessary consumption\, and fosters an inclusive\, community-driven approach to making. \nHeartening is a community-driven initiative dedicated to creating a sustainable culture of giving and reuse. They are powered by volunteers who care about giving clothing back to the community freely or extremely cheaply. \nSave the Good Stuff is committed to the preservation and reuse of vulnerable vintage and historic building materials. They aim to maintain the integrity of Austin’s built environment. \nWanderlust Wine Co.  is the world’s largest wine-on-tap winery. They are on a mission to change the world through wine by utilizing sustainable\, recyclable and reusable packaging and practices. \nPlus\, three additional businesses that will qualify via the Circular Accelerator program on August 13th.

DESCRIPTION:Join us Wednesday August 13 for the monthly general meeting to socialize with like-minded Austin neighbors and hear a talk on: \nAustin Wildlife Rescue by Jules Maron\, Executive Director \nJules’ presentation provides an overview of Austin Wildlife Rescue. “It explains what we do\, and how we care for the 10\,000 wild animals we receive annually.” She will also discuss the impacts of habitat fragmentation on wildlife and how the public can help mitigate it in their own backyards. \nJules Maron is the Executive Director of Austin Wildlife Rescue.  Prior to this\, she worked for 15 years in corporate finance with IBM.  She found herself involved in the wildlife rehabilitation realm quite by accident\, where she started off as a volunteer\, working her way up through every position\, and is now the Executive Director.  She has dedicated herself to Austin Wildlife Rescue for 9 years\, holds a personal Texas Parks and Wildlife permit for rehabilitation\, and is a Certified Wildlife Rehabilitator. \nShe received her B.S. in Child Development and her M.S. in Accounting at UT Austin\, and is certified in Pain and Wound Management and as a Wildlife Rehabilitator by the International Wildlife Rehabilitation Council (IWRC). \nWhere? El Mercado South at 1302 South 1st St\, Austin. There is a spacious parking lot across the street. DESCRIPTION:The City of Austin is hosting its 14th Annual Career Expo on April 2\, 2025. This event is intended to help build a stronger community by providing opportunities for local employers to connect with talent to fill critical vacancies and help job seekers find that perfect job/career opportunity. \nJob Seekers will have opportunities to meet face-to-face with company representatives. This year\, the City launched a new contingent hiring pilot program in January which allows departments to conduct interviews and extend contingent job offers on-site during recruiting events. There are close to 90 different job titles included in the program in areas such as accounting\, customer service\, finance\, human resources\, healthcare\, engineering\, and various operations type jobs.  \nSeveral City departments will be participating in Career Expo and there will be opportunities for job seekers in attendance to be interviewed on the spot during the event and potentially be offered a job. Any offers would be contingent upon passing any required background checks and assessments. \nShowcase presentations by local employers will also be happening throughout the day during the event and will feature tips for job seekers. We encourage job seekers to bring copies of their resume to share with prospective employers and decide in advance which employer booths they would like to visit. \nMore than 100 employers are expected to be in attendance\, including private employers\, state agencies\, higher education\, technical schools\, temporary agencies\, many smaller businesses with skilled labor and customer service job openings\, and City of Austin departments. \nJob seekers can RSVP here.

DESCRIPTION:Dear Community\, Join us! \nWe are bringing back our bus tours\, but this time with a twist. Instead of a tour\, we will be hands-on for this community day by making and packing meals with essentials to give back to our community and fill our local ATX free fridges. \nWe will meet at Texas Coffee Traders Cafe (3223 E 7th St. Austin\, TX 78702) to pack meals\, and then\, from there\, we will split into 2-3 groups to take the CapMetro bus to a local free fridge in the East Austin/Mueller area. \nComplimentary drip coffee provided to all volunteers! \nSchedule: \n\n11 am-12 pm – Meet at Texas Coffee Traders Cafe to mingle\, make meals\, pack food/essential bags. (Masks will be provided and required to make meals)\n12-1 pm – We will split up into 2-3 groups to the Nixta Taqueria\, 2nd St\, and the Mueller free fridges with the meals/essentials. Selected participants will receive free business training through a series of workshops and individual coaching. The program concludes with a soft pitch\, where the top 3 performers will receive entry to compete at Circular Austin Showcase this fall for a $2\,000 prize. \nCircular Showcase is a pitch competition where established businesses compete for a cash prize of $10\,000 to support their growth. Up to 5 circular enterprises will have a chance to compete in a public showcase in late August 2025.
