DESCRIPTION:On June 16th\, Bill McKibben will be joining Solar Austin to talk about his work fighting the most pressing environmental issues of our times.  \nBill McKibben is a founder of 350.org\, the first planet-wide\, grassroots climate change movement\, which has organized twenty thousand rallies around the world in every country save North Korea\, spearheaded the resistance to the Keystone Pipeline\, and launched the fast-growing fossil fuel divestment movement. \nA renowned writer\, McKibben was awarded the Right Livelihood Prize in 2014\, sometimes called the ‘alternative Nobel.’ His 1989 book The End of Nature is regarded as the first book for a general audience about climate change\, and has appeared in 24 languages— he’s gone on to write a dozen more books.  \nThe Schumann Distinguished Scholar in Environmental Studies at Middlebury College and a fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences\, McKibben was the 2013 winner of the Gandhi Prize and the Thomas Merton Prize\, and holds honorary degrees from 18 colleges and universities. Foreign Policy named him to their inaugural list of the world’s 100 most important global thinkers\, and the Boston Globe said he was “probably America’s most important environmentalist.” \nA former staff writer for the New Yorker\, he writes frequently for a wide variety of publications around the world\, including the New York Review of Books\, National Geographic\, and Rolling Stone. He lives in the mountains above Lake Champlain with his wife\, the writer Sue Halpern\, where he spends as much time as possible outdoors . DESCRIPTION:Attend by going to Zoom at https://us02web.zoom.us/j/5133069449\nor start Zoom.us\, select “Join a Meeting”\, and enter the code 5133069449 \nJoin us to watch a presentation: What will climate change cost?\nPresenter: Professor David Trossman\, University of Texas at Austin\, Oden Institute. \nSummary: It’s high time that earth system models are used for decision-making. What are they being used for? The numbers about temperature increases\, precipitation changes\, sea level rise\, and other outputs of climate simulations are now being used by economists to boil the impacts of climate change down to dollars and cents. That may not make a whole lot of sense to people who understand the environmental and humanitarian crisis that is climate change\, but it’s going to cost a lot of cents. The simplest way of quantifying our impact on climate that informs policy-makers about what the price of emitting carbon should be is the social cost of carbon. This presentation will show some examples of the factors that contribute to the social cost of carbon and what has been done to inform international agreements about the optimal balance between the economy and our greenhouse gas emissions. Why can’t we have our cake (good economy) and eat it (reduce emissions) too? There will be a few anonymous online polls. We will write up participants’ views into a short report that we’ll send to both the Austin and the state Executive Committees. Under his leadership\, the Sierra Club has grown to more than 3.5 million supporters\, and its Beyond Coal campaign has been recognized as one of the most effective in environmental history. Prior to joining the Sierra Club\, Michael led the Rainforest Action Network for seven years\, during which the organization won more than a dozen key environmental commitments from America’s largest corporations. \nMichael holds degrees in economics and finance from West Chester University in Pennsylvania and is a regular contributor to the Huffington Post. His critically acclaimed book\, Coming Clean: Breaking America’s Addiction to Oil and Coal (2010)\, details a plan for a new green economy that will create good paying jobs\, promote environmental justice\, and bolster national security. Michael and his wife\, Mary\, attribute their ongoing passion for environmental activism in part to their concern that their children inherit a healthy world.

DESCRIPTION:Solar Austin is doing something a bit different this month… Instead of our usual happy hour\, we’re excited to invite you to the closing celebration of the trailblazing Equitable Clean Energy Jobs (ECEJ) Program!  \nLaunched in partnership by Solar Austin and Huston-Tillotson University (HT)\, the ECEJ Program aimed to improve diversity and cultural inclusivity in Austin’s growing clean energy sector through an innovative structured internship matching process. Executed in the midst of a global pandemic\, an economic recession\, and the historic Black Lives Matter movement\, the ECEJ initiative was a leap towards a stronger and more equitable local workforce\, in a sector that is nationally over 70% white and male.  \nAs summer internships come to a close\, we’re excited to celebrate the six amazing interns and five clean energy companies who made this pilot program possible! Join us as we reflect with program participants on what was accomplished during this pilot phase\, what challenges were faced\, and what still needs to be done to lower the barrier of entry for passionate individuals who seek to make a difference in this field and in their communities.

SUMMARY:Climate Change and its Effects on Floods in Texas Happy Hour with Raymond Slade
DESCRIPTION:Catastrophic-flooding threats are arguably as severe in Central Texas as anywhere in the country. Many of the largest storms produce catastrophic flooding thus deeming the area to be “Flash Flood Alley”. The area is characterized by fast-developing intense storms\, some of which have produced world-record rainfall depths. Also\, geographic characteristics such as thin soils and steep land slopes contribute substantially to the flooding. However\, perhaps the most substantial flooding threat is from easterly moving storms which often follow basin orientation—such storms can overlie and move with channel flooding thus causing immense increases in downstream flood peaks. Nevertheless\, floods are merely a hazard—mankind is the disaster. For example\, the area often leads the nation in drowning deaths and flood-damage costs–about 300\,000 people reside within the 100-year floodplain in the five-county IH 35 corridor from Williamson to Bexar County.\n \n\nAdditionally\, climate change likely is increasing the flooding threat. For example\, linear temporal-trend analyses of data for all 14 long-term NOAA hourly rainfall gages in Central Texas indicate annual- maximum 6-hour storm depths to have increased by a mean value of 19 percent during the past 60 years. Most of the increases are deemed to be statistically significant at the 90-percent confidence level. Also\, analyses of data for all 19 gages in the area infer annual-maximum 2-day storm depths to have increased by 16 percent over the past 70 years. Even small increases in large storm depths can cause large increases in peak discharges because\, for such storms\, most of the increased rainfall becomes runoff rather than ground infiltration or basin attenuation. For example\, analyses of data for 15 long-term streamflow gages in the area document annual-peak discharges to have increased by a mean value of 72 percent during the past 60 years. Analyses of the largest of the annual-peak discharges indicate such peaks to have even greater increases. Finally\, based on the trend analyses\, the flooding threat in Central Texas is expected to increase even more in the future.\n\n \nJoin us as we talk with Raymond Slade\, Certified Professional Hydrologist\, and learn more about this important topic and his upcoming publication!
