SUMMARY:This Land Is Your Land: A Conversation With Beverly Gage
DESCRIPTION:We invite you to join us on Tuesday\, June 30\, for a conversation with Pulitzer Prize-winning author Beverly Gage on her recent book This Land is Your Land: A Road Trip Through U.S. History. First Light Books co-founder Taylor Bruce will moderate the conversation. \nThis evening is hosted in partnership with First Light Books and the Dolph Briscoe Center for American History at The University of Texas at Austin and will be part of the LBJ Presidential Library’s series celebrating the new exhibit The American Experiment. \n6:00-6:30 p.m.  Arrivals + The American Experiment exhibit access + book sales\n6:30-7:45 p.m.  Conversation with Beverly Gage\, moderated by Taylor Bruce\n7:45-8:45 p.m.  Reception + book sales and signing + The American Experiment exhibit access\nAbout the book \nRide along with Pulitzer Prize–winning historian Beverly Gage as she travels the country to see the museums\, historic sites\, roadside attractions\, reenactments\, and souvenir shops where Americans learn—and fight—about our history. From the birth of the nation in Philadelphia to Disneyland and the California dream\, This Land Is Your Land offers a guided tour of thirteen places and thirteen key moments that define America’s greatest successes and challenges. \nThe year 2026 marks the 250th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence\, a document that proclaimed the liberty and equality of all human beings\, but produced a country that often failed to agree upon—or live up to—those ideals. This Land Is Your Land is for everyone who wants to find that history—to experience it and confront it\, to celebrate it and condemn it—in the places where it happened. \nGage shows that Americans can face their past and still love their country. Toss the book in the back seat—or listen on audio with the windows down—and join the journey. \nBook sales and signing\nThe Store at LBJ will be selling copies of This Land is Your Land: A Road Trip Through U.S. History onsite from 6:00-6:30 p.m. and again following the program. Beverly Gage will be signing copies of the book following the program. \nBy purchasing through the Store at LBJ\, you support a local cultural institution. All proceeds from sales support our programming\, exhibits\, and educational initiatives at the LBJ Presidential Library. \nAbout the speakers \nBeverly Gage teaches American history at Yale. Her book G-Man: J. Edgar Hoover and the Making of the American Century received the 2023 Pulitzer Prize for Biography\, the Bancroft Prize in American History\, the National Book Critics Circle Award for Biography\, and the Los Angeles Times Book Prize in Biography. She is also the author of The Day Wall Street Exploded: A Story of America in its First Age of Terror\, and writes for numerous journals and magazines\, including The New Yorker\, The New York Times\, and The Washington Post. \nTaylor Bruce is a writer\, editor\, entrepreneur\, and bookshop owner based in Austin\, Texas. He’s spent the past quarter-century exploring the boundaries of storytelling and place via media\, publishing\, brand content\, and brick-and-mortar business. After a career in magazine journalism\, Taylor created and launched the indie publishing brand Wildsam in 2012. The series of field guides reimagined the travel genre with deep literary soul and classic design. Wildsam built a cult following behind the brand’s comprehensive point of view\, its evocative voice\, and a who’s-who lineup of cultural contributors. Wildsam published over 65 guides\, selling over 1 million copies across 2\,000 shops\, hotels\, museums\, and national retailers. In 2022\, Taylor sold Wildsam to the Fortune 500 company Camping World\, where he led all media and publishing until 2025. Taylor has worked closely with 100+ emerging and iconic brands across adventure\, fashion\, hospitality\, auto\, and technology\, to craft strategic connections to place. He serves as an advisor to Faherty Brand and is the co-founder of a bookshop-cafe concept called First Light.\nAbout The American Experiment exhibit \nThrough an exceptional partnership with the National Archives and Records Administration and the Briscoe Center for American History\, the LBJ Presidential Library will showcase extraordinary original documents that have shaped the course of American history. Across four rotating exhibitions on display May 30 through January 10\, visitors will encounter defining moments—from the Brown v. Board of Education decision and the Fourteenth Amendment to the Louisiana Purchase and the Wright Brothers’ Flying Machine Patent. \nDocuments on display on the evening of June 30th will include President Franklin D. Roosevelt’s Day of Infamy Speech\, the treasury warrant for the purchase of Alaska\, deed of gift for the Statue of Liberty\, the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo\, the Alien Enemies Act of 1798\, and President Woodrow Wilson’s April 2\, 1917 joint address to Congress leading to a declaration of war against Germany\, among others. \nThe American Experiment initiative pairs these iconic artifacts with dynamic public programs featuring leading historians\, authors\, and thought leaders. Together\, we hope to explore how the American story has unfolded over 250 years—and where it may go next.\nLocation and parking \nThe conversation will be hosted in the 10th floor Atrium of the LBJ Presidential Library. Free parking will be available at the LBJ Library visitors’ lot located at 2313 Red River Street.\nRegistration \nAdvance registration is requested as space is limited. Please register here.

Join fellow book lovers in the community to dive into works by Asian American authors. From new releases by emerging voices to beloved community favorites\, fiction to non-fiction and everything in-between\, explore the diversity of American literature from an Asian American lens. \nAll meet ups are free and open to the public to attend. No need to have finished the book to attend\, though recommended. \nThis Month’s Book \nDarius the Great is Not Okay by Adib Khorram \nDarius Kellner speaks better Klingon than Farsi\, and he knows more about Hobbit social cues than Persian ones. He’s about to take his first-ever trip to Iran\, and it’s pretty overwhelming—especially when he’s also dealing with clinical depression\, a disapproving dad\, and a chronically anemic social life. In Iran\, he gets to know his ailing but still formidable grandfather\, his loving grandmother\, and the rest of his mom’s family for the first time. And he meets Sohrab\, the boy next door who changes everything.

SUMMARY:The Big We: A Creative Convening
DESCRIPTION:Austin’s creative community has experienced a perfect storm of reductions or delays in Federal\, State\, and City funding; a lack of performance\, rehearsal\, and studio space; and little civic infrastructure to provide a safety net for artists\, performers\, and arts organizations when hard times fall. More than a few arts spaces and institutions have closed\, some as old as 35 years\, while arts organizations “hunker down” into silos\, to keep producing their work on less while protecting what little they have. \nAfter years of increasingly hard times\, a group of ten Austin arts leaders from all genres began gathering informally to discuss how to manifest a more cohesive community among creatives. They asked\, “How can we work together on a purpose greater than our differences?” “How can we create a meeting space that is expansive enough to encompass divergent opinions but focus on solutions that we create for ourselves?” The Creative Congress was born. \nWith the facilitation and sponsorship of A3 Art Alliance Austin\, (a newly formed Local Arts Agency) they developed a plan to host a city-wide convening of artists\, musicians\, performers and others in the creative community to develop a more cohesive artistic community for the purposes of networking resources\, opportunities\, spaces and expertise; for creating solutions to our creative community’s issues through collaboration; and to gather plans\, collaborative groups and leaders to create a self-defining Community Arts Plan. \nWHO IS INVITED \nALL Austin-area artists\, musicians\, performers of all types\, writers\, electronic media artists\, arts administrators\, curators\, technicians\, board members\, and philanthropists. \nGOAL \nFostering collaboration between different sectors of Austin’s creative community\, the convening will emphasize the importance of purposeful cross-pollination across art forms\, networks\, and cultural arts organizations to chart a self-defined course for our creative community. \n  \nITINERARY \nFriday\, March 27 \n12:00pm THE BIG WE Convening Box Luncheon featuring “flash” keynote speakers from the creative community\, each of whom has done something extraordinary to change the status quo \n1:15pm Training sessions with Shana Merlin on “Open Space Technology” and Karen LaShelle\, Executive Director of Austin Together on “The Art of Collaboration” \n2:30pm Break \n3:00pm Open Space Technology: “Pitch Sessions” \n3:30pm-4:30pm Community Discussions – Session I \n4:30pm-5:30pm Wrap-up Session \n5:30pm Break \n6:00pm Networking Mixer with dinner\, music\, beverages \n8:00pm The Big We video + 3 more “flash” keynote speakers. SUMMARY:Artist Reception for Metamorphosis: The Alchemy of Waste\, Connective Tissue\, and Build Me A Garden: From Soil to Surface
DESCRIPTION:Celebrate the opening of three new exhibitions at the Julia C. Butridge Gallery. Join artists Aileen Chen\, Sara Kate Hannon\, and Rakhee Jain Desai for an evening of art\, conversation\, and community as their work explores transformation\, connection\, and relationships to materials\, identity\, and land. This event is free and open to the public. \nLearn more about these exhibits at the Julia C. Butridge Gallery webpage. \n  \n“Metamorphosis” is a collection of works by artist Aileen Chen that explores the beauty and possibilities in giving new life to “waste.” Reclaimed fabrics are sculpted into vibrant blooms. Unwanted objects transform into striking compositions. Chen’s work reminds us of our collective responsibility to preserve our planet\, and our own ability to undergo renewals and contribute to a more resilient\, harmonious world. \nConnective Tissue is an exhibition that explores the unseen threads that bind us to one another and to ourselves. Through layered paintings and drawings\, this body of work examines themes of identity\, relationships\, and the emotional landscapes we navigate daily. The abstracted forms—fragmented faces\, reaching hands\, and overlapping bodies—become metaphors for the complex and often fragile connections that hold us together. The show invites viewers to reflect on these invisible bonds\, offering a moment of introspection into how we connect\, disconnect\, and seek understanding. \nBuild Me A Garden: From Soil to Surface explores how relationships with land are developed and reimagined through labor\, lineage and living materials. The exhibition uses craft techniques\, abstraction\, materiality\, and sculptural gestures to give form to the intangible: memory\, longing\, belonging\, and the emotional relationship between land and culture. \nDrawing from her lineage in Rajasthan\, India\, Rakhee Jain Desai brings heritage textile knowledge\, natural dyeing\, mordants\, resist techniques\, and ecological processes into conversation with a land that did not birth these traditions but now holds its people. Through the acts of growing dyes in Texas soil\, harvesting plant matter\, and working with natural materials\, Rakhee explores what it means to carry cultural knowledge across geographies and to plant it in new ground\, building a garden of evolving culture and craft practices where color emerges from the chemistry of natural materials\, soil\, water\, and time.

SUMMARY:Sierra Club March Meeting: Water for People and the Environment
DESCRIPTION:Join us on Tuesday March 10th for our March general meeting to socialize with like-minded Austin neighbors and hear a talk about water issues facing the state of Texas. \nThis month we are very excited to be in a new venue\, The Mosaic Workshop in East Austin. Thanks to the folks there for generously offering to host us! \nDoors open at 6:30 for a light dinner and conversation. Club updates and program starts at 7pm. We hope you’ll join us — and bring a friend who cares about Texas’ water future! \nDr. Evgenia Spears\, Water Program Coordinator for the Lone Star Chapter Sierra Club\, will join us via video link to speak on water issues facing the state of Texas. \nWater issues affect all of us — from river flows in Central Texas\, to desalination proposals on the Gulf Coast\, to aging water infrastructure and groundwater depletion across the state. Evgenia will discuss these problems and address the major policy challenges ahead\, including what Sierra Club has done and is doing to protect Texas waters. She will also highlight how you can get involved through the Chapter’s Water for People & the Environment Committee\, a statewide volunteer initiative dedicated to protecting Texas’ water. \nPlease RSVP HERE for in-person attendance! \nZoom option: For those that can’t make this event in person\, a Zoom Link will be available at 7 pm. \nAlso\, a recording of the presentation will be posted to the Austin Group’s YouTube channel within several days. \nEvgenia Spears leads advocacy efforts to protect Texas’ water resources for the Sierra Club’s Lone Star Chapter. Through grassroots organizing\, water education\, and legislative advocacy\, she works to ensure that communities across the state have a voice in shaping a sustainable water future. Prior to joining Sierra Club\, Evgenia spent several years at Texas A&M University in College Station\, where she earned a doctorate with a focus on natural resource management\, taught undergraduate courses on natural resource policy\, served as a watershed coordinator with the Texas A&M AgriLife Extension Service\, and developed strategic natural resource planning documents for Texas. Having lived in rural Ukraine\, suburban Russia\, and now in the U.S.\, Evgenia brings a unique perspective on water management\, viewing water not simply as a resource to manage\, but as a relationship to nurture. Outside of her work\, Evgenia enjoys being with her family\, spending time in nature\, and traveling.
