SUMMARY:Virtual HH - Tour of Commons Ford Prairie with Amy Concilio
DESCRIPTION:Join us this Thursday\, May 14\, from 6-8pm for a virtual tour of a restored native Texas prairie at Commons Ford MetroPark. The 40-acre meadow was restored in 2011-2012 to remove invasive grasses and bring back habitat for native birds\, and has been managed since then with regular prescribed burns to maintain high biodiversity. Annual vegetation surveys have been conducted since 2010. \nOur speaker\, Dr. Amy Concilio\, is a plant ecologist and professor at St. Edward’s University\, and has been leading the vegetation sampling campaigns with a team of enthusiastic students and volunteers since 2017. She will take us through the meadow virtually\, introducing some of the dominant and exciting rare grasses and wildflowers that have returned to the site\, and discussing the implications of the restoration for ecosystem functioning and biodiversity conservation. Expect to see lots of pretty pictures of plants and come away with some tips for spotting them when you are next able to visit the park in person! \nThe talk will be held on Zoom\, and you can click on this link to join: https://stedwards.zoom.us/j/99180023159?pwd=K3owZmR1KzlON295UnFPcDQ0bGREQT09\nThe Meeting ID: 991 8002 3159\nThe Password is: 088101

SUMMARY:Park Talk: To Love And To Advocate
DESCRIPTION:NPCA’s Park Talk series is a new way for park advocates to stay informed and engaged in the most important issues facing America’s national parks. \nPlease join us for this special online event featuring Fort Davis National Historic Site. \nWhat does it mean to advocate for the national parks? Join us as we unveil threats to our Texas national parks\, how park advocates have successfully protected them and how you can turn your love of national parks into action. \nImagine taking a lantern tour of Fort Davis\, looking up to see the stars and instead being confronted by a condominium development. NPCA is dedicated to preserving and protecting the natural and cultural heritage of America’s national parks\, but we cannot do that without park lovers and advocates like you. Alan Spears will unveil threats to national parks and how NPCA has been successful in protecting these special places — like the viewshed at Fort Davis — and what you can do to help. \nYou can RSVP here.

SUMMARY:Texas Railroad Commissioner Candidate Forum
DESCRIPTION:This year Texans will elect a new commissioner to the state agency that is responsible for regulating pollution from oil and gas development to uranium and coal mining. Join the conversation on how we can make this agency more accountable to the people of Texas – not just special interests. \nAt the Candidates Forum on May 27\, participants will learn the viewpoints and positions of candidates Chrysta Castaneda (confirmed)\, Roberto Alonzo (confirmed) and James Wright (not confirmed yet). You are invited to participate and may register here: https://bit.ly/RegisterRRCCandidatesForum \nThe mission of the Railroad Commission of Texas is to serve Texas by stewardship of natural resources and the environment\, protection of personal and community safety\, and support of enhanced development and economic vitality for the benefit of Texans. Ignoring their mission\, the Commission has allowed toxic waste\, air and water pollution\, and the corporate abuse of eminent domain to affect people across the state. Incumbent commissioners regularly receive campaign contributions from the same companies they regulate. They rarely declare conflicts of interest when making punitive decisions over companies they have a stake in. \nThe Railroad Commission is one of the most important environmental regulators in Texas\, and now is the time to make sure the agency is accountable to the people\, not big polluters.

SUMMARY:Interfaces: Artists On Series (Panel)
DESCRIPTION:Join Interfaces’ first Artists On: Series cohort for a panel on how climate change and sustainability informs their artistic practice! Each artist will also share a piece of their work. Use this zoom link to watch. \nABOUT ARTISTS ON: Similar to the short-lived New York Times series\, artists on will feature Austin-area artists teaching\, performing\, and talking about big topics that our society deals with every day. There is no way to extrapolate artistry from political and historical context\, and we both recognize\, and champion artists that are working within the intersections of social justice & art. We are kicking off this series in efforts to bring FREE arts education from local artists with historically marginalized backgrounds to the Austin-area. It is important that we #teachlivingartists\, and that we drive home one point: education is for EVERYONE. We are proud that our first Artists On is in partnership with the City of Austin’s Office of Sustainability & Cultural Arts Division of the City of Austin Economic Development Department.

SUMMARY:How Can Socialists Fight for The End of Policing?
DESCRIPTION:You must RSVP here for the Zoom Link: https://actionnetwork.org/events/how-can-socialists-fight-for-the-end-of-policing-a-conversation-with-alex-vitale/ \nThe nationwide protests against racist police violence have been inspiring\, and as socialist organizers we fight for political reforms like defunding the police that can meaningfully restructure our society for justice and peace. On Friday\, join us for a discussion with Alex Vitale\, Professor of Sociology at Brooklyn College and author of The End of Policing (temporarily free as an e-book) on how we can organize for lasting political reform. \nWe’re living through another wave of racial terrorism and police murders of black people. Working class people and working class communities of color in the United States have just lost tens of millions of our jobs through no fault of our own. As a result of the structure of the racial capitalism\, the victims of COVID-19 are overwhelming black people and people of color\, who disproportionately are low-wage essential workers who cannot work from home\, and who disproportionately cannot afford quality healthcare. Throughout this crisis\, politicians at all levels of government are overwhelmingly in the hands of the capitalist class\, and are doing all they can to bail capitalists out at the expense of the working class. \nWe know that neoliberal capitalism leaves millions of us to starve and to be targeted\, harassed\, and imprisoned. We have a carceral and police system designed to target the poorest among us instead of providing universal\, class-wide social programs for our health\, housing\, and dignity. Without universal social reforms that undermine the basis of poverty\, the capitalist class divides the working class and targets the most vulnerable among us. This is how we have ended up with a years-long pandemic of US police killing people\, often without consequences. They are fulfilling their role in society\, and it is our job to change society to eliminate that role. Let’s discuss how we can do that together and organize for justice for all.

SUMMARY:Online Sierra Club monthly meeting: Ethical Choices in Modern Agriculture
DESCRIPTION:Our monthly Austin Sierra Club meeting will be online via Zoom. \nWe’ll start off with Announcements on current events… Our featured speaker is Carol Whitaker with a presentation on Ethical Choices in Modern Agriculture. \nDo you worry about climate change? Ever wonder how food\, food production\, and our food choices impact our planet? Have you watched COWSPIRACY or WHAT THE HEALTH documentaries on Netflix? Curious about which foods are the most planet-friendly? Join us for a thought provoking presentation about how our food choices can harm or heal our planet. \n– Learn how food production has changed in the last 100 years.\n– Explore and compare the environmental impacts of producing different types of food.\n– Learn about the latest meat and plant-based food science technologies.\n– Learn what the water and carbon footprints of your eating habits are.\n– Explore food producing/consuming solutions\, and see which ones are the most planet-friendly. \nCarol Whitaker has an MBA from the University of Dallas\, an MS in Management Information Systems from NOVA Southeastern University and was an IT Program Management Professional for 34 years. Her love of the natural world\, years of community service to help environmental causes\, and her personal health struggles (and subsequent transformation) led her to uncover the connection between human health and the environment. She has since earned her Certificate in Plant-Based Nutrition from eCornell and works with the non-profit Educated Choices Program\, helping others understand how what they put on their plates really matters. \nIf you have not used Zoom before to join online meetings\, it’s recommended to get a free account at http://zoom.us/ . It’s a good idea to test your phone or PC prior to the event. Turning on your microphone and camera (to be heard and seen during the meeting) is typically not needed.
