If you have difficulty\, you can call me at 512-451-5985 and we’ll try to work it out then. \nAt our meeting\, Victoria first will lead all who are willing in sharing about what the shutdown is like for us. In this period of physical isolation and anxiety\, the last thing we need is personal isolation from one another.  We can hear and abide with each other and become a closer team by sharing our experiences. \nCyrus Reed will then talk about a recent success\, the Austin Energy Plan that the Austin City Council passed on March 26 . Cyrus will discuss a few problems with the process and steps to increase input from a more diverse population next time. But he’ll also explain the innovative REACH strategy which cuts a lot of carbon pollution while we transition to ending all carbon pollution from electricity generation by 2035. Furthermore\, if renewable energy and storage get cheap enough\, we may be able to move that 2035 to an earlier date in the next Plan update. There will be ample time for Q&A. \nCyrus Reed is the long-time Texas state Conservation Director and current interim state Director of the Sierra Club. He has extensive experience working with our local and state officials on energy and conservation issues. Cyrus was also on the Working Group that helped craft the Austin Energy Plan. \nCyrus has a Ph.D. in Geography from the University of Texas at Austin\, with a focus on water policy and the dispute over the Rio Grande water with Mexico. Prior to becoming conservation director\, he served as Sierra Club’s lobbyist on energy and air quality issues during the 2005\, 2007 legislative sessions\, and directed the Texas Center for Policy Studies\, an environmental policy and advocacy organization based in Austin\, for five years. He is presently working on energy issues and their impacts. Cyrus has also worked as a journalist and has spent considerable time in Mexico\, Costa Rica and Nicaragua. \nAfter Cyrus speaks\, we will talk about how and what the next steps for our Action Teams will be. SUMMARY:Interest Groups and the Battle Over Clean Energy and Climate Policy in the American States
DESCRIPTION:Bio: Leah Stokes is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Political Science and affiliated with the Bren School of Environmental Science & Management and the Environmental Studies Department at the University of California\, Santa Barbara (UCSB). \nDr. Stokes works on energy\, climate and environmental politics. Within American Politics\, her work focuses on representation and public opinion; voting behavior; and public policy\, particularly at the state level. Within environmental politics\, she researches climate change\, renewable energy\, water and chemicals policy. Her research has been published in top journals including the American Political Science Review\, American Journal of Political Science\, British Journal of Political Science\, Nature Energy\, Energy Policy\, and Environmental Science & Technology. Dr. Stokes has also published articles in The New York Times\, The Washington Post\, The Los Angeles Times\, The Guardian\, CNN and elsewhere. She is frequently quoted in national media. \nDr. Stokes completed her PhD in Public Policy in the Department of Urban Studies and Planning’s Environmental Policy & Planning group at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). She also received a masters from MIT’s Political Science Department. Before that\, she completed an MPA in Environmental Science & Policy at the School of International & Public Affairs (SIPA) and the Earth Institute at Columbia University. Dr. Stokes has a BSc in Psychology and East Asian Studies from the University of Toronto. Prior to academia\, she worked at the Parliament of Canada and Resources for the Future. \nAbstract: In 1999\, Texas passed a landmark clean energy law\, beginning a groundswell of new policies that promised to make the US a world leader in renewable energy. As Leah Stokes shows in Short Circuiting Policy\, however\, that policy did not lead to momentum in Texas\, which failed to implement its solar laws or clean up its electricity system. Examining clean energy laws in Texas\, Kansas\, Arizona\, and Ohio over a thirty-year time frame\, Stokes argues that organized combat between advocate and opponent interest groups is central to explaining why states are not on track to address the climate crisis. She tells the political history of our energy institutions\, explaining how fossil fuel companies and electric utilities have promoted climate denial and delay. Stokes further explains the limits of policy feedback theory\, showing the ways that interest groups drive retrenchment through lobbying\, public opinion\, political parties and the courts. DESCRIPTION:On March 19\, 2020 Austin Bar Member\, Pooja Sethi\, after speaking to her friend and Austin EMS Association President\, Selena Xie\, realized that in the new world of Covid-19\, there was a gap in how some of our communities will access food. Concerned\, Pooja contacted five other women about helping those who are food insecure in Austin. They formed a group called “Quaranteam” — comprising of Pooja Sethi\, Kennon Wooten\, Margaret Chen Kercher\, Julie Ann Nitsch\, CJ Zhao\, and Ashley Cheng. \nThese women took the initiative in their own hands to step in place of the resources lost for the homeless population. The first mission started with Kennon Wooten making peanut butter sandwiches to feed those without access to food. The quaranteam escalated from there. They have worked hard with Austin EMS Association and have contacted restaurants to give meals\, reached out to community members to donate meals\, and have personally donated meals\, masks\, and tents to our unhoused populations. \nYou can RSVP here.

SUMMARY:Virtual HH - Tour of Commons Ford Prairie with Amy Concilio
DESCRIPTION:Join us this Thursday\, May 14\, from 6-8pm for a virtual tour of a restored native Texas prairie at Commons Ford MetroPark. The 40-acre meadow was restored in 2011-2012 to remove invasive grasses and bring back habitat for native birds\, and has been managed since then with regular prescribed burns to maintain high biodiversity. Annual vegetation surveys have been conducted since 2010. \nOur speaker\, Dr. Amy Concilio\, is a plant ecologist and professor at St. Edward’s University\, and has been leading the vegetation sampling campaigns with a team of enthusiastic students and volunteers since 2017.
