SUMMARY:Solar Austin - Female Leaders In Distributed Generation + Solar Storage
DESCRIPTION:Register to join Solar Austin for our monthly happy hour on October 26 as we get the latest on energy storage from the industry’s female leaders.\n \n\nIn September and October\, Solar Austin’s Happy Hour spotlight has been shining on Female Leaders in Energy Storage. A few years ago storage was regarded as a luxurious add-on to a residential or commercial solar system. Now\, due to a decrease in cost\, increase in technology offerings\, and an ever-present risk of losing power\, storage has become almost essential to many new solar installations.\n \n\nToday\, Austin is lucky to claim the talents of three female experts in this space\, and it’s time we tap into their knowledge.\n \n\nSolar continues its rapid growth as an instrument of cost savings and resiliency across the “Distributed Generation” (DG) landscape through onsite generation of energy in homes and buildings. Yet\, when the grid is down\, or the sun isn’t shining\, it is storage that keeps the solar energy flowing. Moreover\, when the utility has high rates of electricity during peak rates or needs more power\, storage can be a key component to tap into for cost savings. This recent momentum of DG storage application continues to prepare us for a world of intelligent energy management and even energy sharing.\n \n\nJoin us on October 26th\, for our last virtual happy hour of 2021\, to learn and understand the basics and nuances of distributed generation storage. Madeline Acri of Soligent will speak on behalf of the residential energy storage perspective\, while Jenniffer Gallegos of Yotta unpacks commercial storage. All will be tied together by Judy McElroy of Fractal Energy Consultants who boasts decades of experience in the technical and financial aspects of storage. Together we will chart the path of where this exciting subsegment of the industry is presently and where it will be in the future.\n \n\nSo grab a drink and be prepared to satisfy all your storage curiosities with us! We look forward to seeing you virtually at this event\, and we hope you’ll stay tuned for even more updates on exciting end-of-year programs and events that Solar Austin has in store!\n \n  \nAbout our speakers: \n\nJudy McElroy is the Chief Executive Officer of Fractal Energy Storage Consultants (Fractal)\, a leading international energy storage consultant firm\, providing technical design and financial analysis and owner’s engineering of energy storage projects. SUMMARY:July Happy Hour with Warren Lasher of ERCOT
DESCRIPTION:Join us on July 27th as ERCOT’s Warren Lasher sits down with Solar Austin to discuss what’s happening behind the scenes in Texas energy!\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n \nAs Texans adapted to COVID lockdowns\, extreme winter weather\, and soaring summer temperatures\, the Electric Reliability Council of Texas\, Inc. (ERCOT) underwent its own evolution with its ever-changing resource mix. One of four frequency-independent power grids in North America\, ERCOT is one of a kind in that the balancing authority\, the interconnection\, and the regional transmission organization all exist under the same entity and physical system. This unique structure\, of course\, comes with its own set of unique challenges and opportunities.\n \nJoin us on July 27th as Warren Lasher\, the Senior Director of System Planning at ERCOT\, sits down with Solar Austin to discuss what’s happening behind the scenes in Texas energy. In a featured interview on KUT\, Lasher likened ERCOT’s role as a reliability coordinator and balancing authority to John Bohnham’s role in Led Zeppelin. Just as a drummer might need to maintain a tempo of 60 beats per minute\, ERCOT needs to maintain the heartbeat of the grid at 60 cycles per second. Lasher has been helping keep the beat steady by first planning for the future.\n \nWe will be chatting about ERCOT’s recent resource adequacy reports and Loss-of-Load studies\, and get a sneak peek at the technologies in the interconnection queue and implications for the future. Hint: you can expect a lot more solar coming down the pipeline! With Lasher’s near horizon view of the ERCOT production market\, this happy hour offers an opportunity for deep inquiry you won’t want to miss!\n \n  \nAbout the Speaker: As Senior Director of System Planning for the Electric Reliability Council of Texas\, Inc. (ERCOT)\, Warren Lasher is responsible for transmission planning\, load forecasting\, and resource adequacy analyses for the ERCOT interconnection. Lasher has been at ERCOT for 15+ years. Previously\, Lasher worked at the Southern Company in Birmingham\, Alabama in the company’s Engineering and Planning organizations. He earned a Bachelor’s degree in Mathematics and graduate degrees in Environmental Management and Computer Science.

SUMMARY:May Happy Hour\, featuring Bill Hetherington\, CEO of Bandera Electric Cooperative
DESCRIPTION:Join us on May 25th to learn how Bandera Electric Cooperative (BEC) and other electric cooperatives are helping Texans build climate resiliency by providing affordable solar energy.\n \nHere at Solar Austin\, we continue to peel back the curtain on local policy and utility action after February’s Winter Storm Uri. It’s not a mystery why over two-thirds of Texans\, left in the cold and dark\, view the performance of their local electric utility as more negative than positive. The one exception to Lone Star utilities’ particularly scathing performance reviews came from the members of the 60+ electric cooperatives operating within the Texas Interconnection grid. According to Forbes Magazine\, customers of these city-owned cooperatives submitted the only positive evaluations of their local utility’s February freeze performance.\n \nAs one of the few applauded utilities\, Bandera Electric Cooperative (BEC) will be joining Solar Austin to discuss what set them apart from commercial competitors. Stretching from the outskirts of Northwest San Antonio to the far west corners of Leakey\, BEC powers as many as 38\,000 members and is helping re-imagine rural communities as we know them. Under the leadership of Bill Heatherington\, BEC strives to provide a democratic and collaborative way of delivering secure\, reliable\, and affordable electricity and high-speed internet access – pillars for 21st century economic stability.\n \nPicking up the discussion from our March Happy Hour on the Texan State of Solar\, Solar Austin aims to shed light on the unproductive blame game between renewables and non-renewables currently gaining traction in our state’s Capitol. Our goal is to help bridge the gap between Central Texas’ energy producers and consumers to better understand how much solar energy matters.\n \nGrab a (virtual) beer with us next Tuesday May 25th to learn how BEC’s Bill Heatherington has garnered such well-deserved successes. If you are interested in learning more about Apolloware\, the financial benefits of solar for Hill Country residents\, BEC Fiber\, and Bill’s vision for decentralized solar and storage fit\, this is a happy hour you won’t want to miss!

SUMMARY:March Happy Hour\, the State of Solar in 2021
DESCRIPTION:Join us on March 30th to learn what’s really happening on the policy and business front of Texas’ State of Solar in 2021. \n\nWhen a deadly winter storm descended last month\, over 5 million homes and businesses were left without power. When the ice finally melted\, Lone Star State officials began searching for answers\, for chinks in the armor of a state widely reputed to be an energy powerhouse. According to data collected by the U.S. Energy Information Administration (EIA) during that week\, solar and wind energy delivered 91% and 106% respectively of its promised power\, while coal and natural gas delivered 73% and 68% respectively of its promised load. Given the performance of clean energy and solar in particular\, we wonder how this information may advise the way for a more robust energy portfolio and less vulnerable electrical grid. On March 30th\, Solar Austin will be sitting down with Sen. Jose Menendez and Charlie Hemmeline to tackle the questions: what can Texas – the Energy Giant – learn from these historic power failures\, and how can the solar industry help us as a state grow resiliency before the next climate-related crisis strikes?\n \nFor the last three years\, State Sen. Jose Menendez (D-26\, Bexar County) has been one of the loudest pro-solar voices on either side of the political aisle. This happy hour\, Sen. Menendez will give us the rundown of Senate Bill 398\, which was filed in early February and will ensure that solar customers receive the information needed to make informed decisions and also prohibit municipalities from unreasonably restricting the right of citizens to choose their own energy source. Tune in to learn more about the actions he’s taking to grow the solar workforce\, expand residential access to solar power\, and support each Texan’s energy independence on the policy side.\n \nLeading this discussion from the business perspective\, we have Charlie Hemmeline\, Executive Director of the Texas Solar Power Association\, a trade association that promotes the development of solar electric generation in Texas. After walking us through the state of residential\, commercial\, and utility solar in Texas in 2020\, Charlie will impart to us his market expectations and performances for 2021. With an understanding of the challenges facing commercial and utility-scale solar projects\, Charlie hopes to leave the Solar Austin community better informed of our performance to date and the opportunities at hand.\n \nSo pull up a chair and keep your devices charged\, this happy hour is one you won’t want to miss!

SUMMARY:Solar Austin Happy Hour\, featuring TreeFolks\, the local solution to climate change
DESCRIPTION:Solar Austin’s upcoming happy hour is dedicated to…trees! Just as solar panels help decarbonize our planet\, trees capture CO2 to keep Austin’s air breathable and sidewalks cool. Trees are also key to our city’s fight against climate change\, thanks in large part to the efforts to a longtime local leader: TreeFolks. \nTreeFolks spent much of its 30 year history rehoming individual trees to Austinites\, until disaster relief work propelled them into the reforestation game and their capacity as an organization expanded tremendously. After helping communities in Central Texas reforest and heal in the wake of fire and flood\, TreeFolks began to focus on strengthening community resilience before disaster could strike. \nIdentifying climate change as the next largest upheaval facing Central Texas\, TreeFolks partnered with City Forest Credits and various branches of the City of Austin to develop carbon capture projects\, planting native trees first in local greenways\, then in privately-owned parcels across Eastern Travis County. As they enter their second year of large-scale reforestation to reduce carbon concentrations in the atmosphere\, TreeFolks continues to plant and adopt out thousands of trees annually because every tree counts in the fight against climate change! \nPlease join us on February 23rd for a chance to win a Texas Walnut sapling and to hear how one tree at a time\, TreeFolks is turning the tide on deforestation in Central Texas!

SUMMARY:January Happy Hour\, Celebrating Agents of Change in the Solar Industry
DESCRIPTION:Kicking off 2021\, Solar Austin invites you to join us in celebrating the pioneers of the Pathways to Clean Energy Careers program!  \nLaunched in the midst of a global pandemic and a historic time focusing on racial justice\, the Pathways Program was a leap towards a stronger and more equitable clean energy workforce\, in a sector that is nationally over 70% white and male.  \nSix companies answered Solar Austin’s challenge to create pathways of opportunity for youth in the solar industry this past fall! From residential to utility scale solar installers\, these regional employers have nurtured the talent of nine young interns — teaching them the intricacies of working in Texas’ bustling solar sector\, while also learning the many ways in which different perspectives add value to the workplace. As fall internships wrap up\, we’re excited to celebrate with our Austin community the amazing interns and clean energy professionals who helped move the needle towards a renewable energy sector that more accurately represents our community.  \nJanuary’s happy hour will be an opportunity to hear program participants’ candid views on the value of and barriers to a diverse and inclusive local clean energy workforce. Solar Austin looks forward to your attendance\, support\, and participation as we take a moment to reflect on what was accomplished\, what needs to be changed\, and what we can all do to create better pathways for passionate individuals that want to make a difference for their underrepresented communities and our warming planet.

SUMMARY:September Happy Hour\, Revising the Austin Climate Equity Plan
DESCRIPTION:Solar Austin is excited to announce the first in a three-part happy hour series centered around local\, federal\, and state energy policy. September’s happy hour will be a unique opportunity to learn about and discuss the City of Austin’s Climate Equity Plan with the Climate Program Manager himself: Zach Baumer! \nRatified by Austin City Council in 2015\, the Austin Community Climate Plan was originally a pledge to reduce the city’s carbon emissions to net-zero by 2050. In pursuit of this ambitious goal\, the city implemented a number of strategies to lower emissions across Austin’s energy\, transportation\, and waste management sectors. Five years in\, it’s time to take stock! Join us as we look back as a community at what strategies worked well and what parts of the plan require improvements.  \nSolar Austin encourages you to read the Climate Equity Plan (download the full version here + the summary document here). The ‘Speak Up’ period during which citizens can offer their input to the Office of Sustainability closes on September 30th\, so we hope that this happy hour not only informs\, but inspires you as a citizen to use your voice!

SUMMARY:Solar Austin Happy Hour\, An Equitable Clean Energy Jobs Celebration!
DESCRIPTION:Solar Austin is doing something a bit different this month… Instead of our usual happy hour\, we’re excited to invite you to the closing celebration of the trailblazing Equitable Clean Energy Jobs (ECEJ) Program!  \nLaunched in partnership by Solar Austin and Huston-Tillotson University (HT)\, the ECEJ Program aimed to improve diversity and cultural inclusivity in Austin’s growing clean energy sector through an innovative structured internship matching process. Executed in the midst of a global pandemic\, an economic recession\, and the historic Black Lives Matter movement\, the ECEJ initiative was a leap towards a stronger and more equitable local workforce\, in a sector that is nationally over 70% white and male.  \nAs summer internships come to a close\, we’re excited to celebrate the six amazing interns and five clean energy companies who made this pilot program possible! Join us as we reflect with program participants on what was accomplished during this pilot phase\, what challenges were faced\, and what still needs to be done to lower the barrier of entry for passionate individuals who seek to make a difference in this field and in their communities.

SUMMARY:Virtual HH - Tour of Commons Ford Prairie with Amy Concilio
DESCRIPTION:Join us this Thursday\, May 14\, from 6-8pm for a virtual tour of a restored native Texas prairie at Commons Ford MetroPark. The 40-acre meadow was restored in 2011-2012 to remove invasive grasses and bring back habitat for native birds\, and has been managed since then with regular prescribed burns to maintain high biodiversity. Annual vegetation surveys have been conducted since 2010. \nOur speaker\, Dr. Amy Concilio\, is a plant ecologist and professor at St. Edward’s University\, and has been leading the vegetation sampling campaigns with a team of enthusiastic students and volunteers since 2017. She will take us through the meadow virtually\, introducing some of the dominant and exciting rare grasses and wildflowers that have returned to the site\, and discussing the implications of the restoration for ecosystem functioning and biodiversity conservation. Expect to see lots of pretty pictures of plants and come away with some tips for spotting them when you are next able to visit the park in person! \nThe talk will be held on Zoom\, and you can click on this link to join: https://stedwards.zoom.us/j/99180023159?pwd=K3owZmR1KzlON295UnFPcDQ0bGREQT09\nThe Meeting ID: 991 8002 3159\nThe Password is: 088101
