SUMMARY:Naturalists at the Ney: Weaving History in the Blackland Prairie
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a community embroidery and stitching event as part of “Weaving History in the Blackland Prairie” \nTogether\, we’ll stitch while learning about the history of the Blackland Prairie\, the land where we practice regenerative agriculture\, steward ongoing conservation efforts\, and the importance of native plants sustaining healthy ecosystems. Through conservation and handwork\, we’ll reflect on how stories\, landscapes\, and traditional textile practices can be woven together to preserve both cultural and ecological heritage. \n“Weaving History in the Blackland Prairie” is rooted in a layered living history that connects land\, labor\, and legacy across generations. The land where the Refugee Collective Farm operates in eastern Travis County is part of the historic Freedom Colony of Littig\, one of the oldest in Texas.  Jackson Morrow\, a formerly enslaved man\, originally owned the land following Emancipation\, cultivating 2\,000 acres that were passed down through generations of his family. Today the Littig Preservation Alliance\, founded by siblings Alaona Gonzales\, Gena Gonzales\, and Christopher Scott\, works to restore the once-thriving community. \nConservationist Jon Beall purchased 300 acres in 1977 and currently preserves it in perpetuity through a conservation easement.  His conservation work through the Wilbarger Creek Conservation Alliance preserves the rural\, historical and ecological significance of this blackland prairie area in partnership with Littig members and neighboring farms and ranches. \nThis project is supported in part by an Austin Live Music Fund Grant of Austin Arts\, Culture\, Music and Entertainment.

Indulge in delicious food by Bhakti Bites\, Gati\, Bodhi Viet Vegan\, Zucchini Kill Bakery\, Dumpling Haus\, Celeste’s Bests\, and more! Engage with various vendors and activities from Allied Scholars for Animal Protection\, Austin/Travis County Food Plan\, Black Medicine Collective\, Sustainable Food Center\, Plant Powered Athlete\, Central Texas Mycological Society\, and even more participants! \nTexas VegFest provides free educational resources to the public focused on the health\, environmental\, and animal benefits of plant-based diets. We’ve attracted a base of 5\,000 attendees each year for over 10 years.

DESCRIPTION:The Emma S. Barrientos Mexican-American Cultural Center (ESB MACC) presents its 19th annual Viva México celebration! This lively outdoor celebration in collaboration with Univision includes live mariachi music\, local bands\, and folkloric dance performances. It is a family-friendly alcohol-free event with free children’s art activities\, games\, and a vendor market. \nUnivision\, our local Spanish-language news station\, will be providing bilingual hosts for the event. They bring high-energy excitement to our announcements in Spanish and English. The Mexican Consulate Humberto Hernández Haddad will give the “Grito de Independencia” or call to independence. \nViva Mexico is an Austin tradition that pays tribute to both Mexico’s Independence Day and to the diverse cultural traditions of Austin’s Mexican\, Mexican-American\, Latino\, Chicano\, and Tejano community.
