07 Nov As COP 19 Nears, Reports Are Unequivocal | Climate Change is Real and It’s Here
The nineteenth United Nations conference-of-parties (COP 19) is about to begin in Warsaw, coming on the heels of early looks at the latest IPCC report. For those who keep abreast of current scientific research, there are no surprises. The climate is changing, it is caused by human activity ("we did it," says the Think Progress article), there is no "pause," and the destruction of oceans by acidification is accelerating as heat is stored therein. Additionally, the report warns that even if emissions decreased, the warming would continue for hundreds of years.
In addition to analysis on the IPCC report, we also feature an alarming study from Hawaii which utilized data from 2006-2010 to extrapolate extreme temperature rises. Spoiler alert: these results will surprise you. We also include a thought-provoking call-to-action from Naomi Klein, a controversial take on the use of nuclear power to counter emissions increases, articles on adaptation, climate change particulars and resistance through divestment, and last, but certainly not least, an informative article from Texas' own Sharon Wilson, the extraordinary organizer behind Earthworks' Texas Oil and Gas Accountability Project. Don't miss her critically important warning for all Texans.
Thanks, from the Texas Drought Project!
