This Month’s Lecture – The Geography of Vampires: Transylvania, Carpathian Ecology, and the Myth of Dracula

Transylvania is both a real and a mythical place. The high Carpathian mountains are still remote and wild, with traditional villages clinging to ancient beliefs and practices. The lost Hungarian Empire left an isolated Magyar population in Transylvania, and ruined castles still evoke dark memories of former more glorious times. Entwined in the facts of history is the myth of Dracula and the tales of vampires that are evoked by the mention of Transylvania. Join me as I try to disentangle fact from fiction about the geography of vampires and the ecology and history of the Carpathian mountains.
